Today’s Program: Proper Protocol
Today’s Speaker: Kim Goddard
Kim Goddard established Proper Protocol, Inc., in 1991. She is a consultant that helps develop people, personally and professionally, across America. Proper Protocol, Inc. offers life lessons beginning at five years of age and up. Ms. Goddard feels there is no one that couldn’t benefit by her teachings. She conducts seminars for hundreds or “one on one” sessions for the more discrete individual. Bottom line? Good manners are a necessity needed by all.
Ms. Goddard recently founded the ReStart program. ReStart is a teen mentoring program in Pinellas County, Florida. Restart is dedicated to young people who have unfortunately entered the legal system by making a bad decision. This character-building program is designed to teach respect, civility and self-worth by working tableside verses roadside (picking up garbage). ReStart is prepared for future growth and is expanding out to troubled teens across the country. If you are interested in becoming a ReStart Instructor, please contact Kim Goddard.
The Court Coach is just another division of Proper Protocol Inc., founded by Goddard. This is a business that supports and directs attorneys, their clients, and individuals who are due to appear, make appearances, and be judged in the courtroom. It can be a terrifying experience for a person about to witness or appear before a jury and/or Judge. Having your personal Court Coach by your side, on your side, can make all the difference.
Kim Goddard is a professional member of the National Speaker Association. She speaks to thousands at schools, colleges, universities, and corporations across the country on 21st Century Etiquette and 21st Century Business Etiquette.
Kim was noted as one of the “Top Twenty Acts under $10K” in the American Corporate Entertainment Magazine in 2002 and as The Emily Post of Tampa Bay, in Tampa Bay Magazine. She was most recently voted one of Tampa Bay’s Most Distinguished Women in Business, 2003.
Goddard has personally played a role as the founder of the Ambassador Committee for The Angelus. The Angelus is home for severely handicapped persons who are not able to care for themselves. All of the residents and students have cerebral palsy and all use wheelchairs. Kim concentrates on making a difference by acting as a voice for the people of The Angelus.
Community organizations in which she is involved include The Angelus, Tampa Club Executive Board, The Tampa Bay Society Advisory Board, The Community Policing Board of Pinellas County, and Ride with the Stars. Kim Goddard, former Tampa Bay talk show host and syndicated newspaper columnist’s lifelong commitment is to the mentoring of young people, both in her profession and as a model for women aspiring to successful leadership roles.

For the last two years, Ron has also gone to Haiti to help the Haitian people by providing free dental care. He will again be going in 2012 from January 20th-28th. Members of our club have always been generous in donating funds to help Ron pay for dental instruments and supplies to help him in this endeavor. If anyone in the club is interested in helping with this worthwhile project, please make a check payable to Kiwanis of St. Petersburg and give it to Marvin Gay. This is, of course, completely up to the discretion of individual members should they choose to donate to this cause. Bus seating is limited to 50 Kiwanians and K-Family members on a first-come-first served basis.
Doorways Update
I want to thank you dearly for providing me with money for college. This means so much to my family and me. I don't have any idea on which college I want to go to yet.
I still have lots of time to think about what I want to do in life and what I want to major in once I get to college. I want to keep all my opportunities open so I can decide how I would like to choose from.
I love school this year. Being in the eighth grade is at the top of the school, and it is an amazing feeling. Now, I really can't wait to get into high school. I am excited and eager to see what it is all about. High school seems like it will be a great new experience for me. By the way, I will be going to Northeast High School.
Currently, I am doing well with all my grades. I am excited to receive rewards of all the good grades I will make this semester.
When I go to Northeast next year, I am hoping to be in the auto shop program they have there. To be in the auto shop program means that I will need to maintain a C average. It also is the same grades for my Doorways plan too.
I love my French and Gym classes. They are so much fun and I have a lot of friends in my classes. In gym class, it gets me pumped up for the rest of the day. Gym is my first period class. The only class I need to work harder on is Language Arts. My teacher is a really cool guy, and he loves to give us a lot of work. He is really nice and the way he teaches is amazing and he has helped me to expand my vocabulary and ability to write so quickly.
I wanted to say that it is so wonderful that I get to be blessed with the opportunity to be in this program. I can't tell you how happy I still am to be in Doorways program and how much I thank you for giving me the amazing opportunity.
Sincerely,
Griffyn B., 8th grader at Meadowlawn Middle School

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian-of-the-Day Paul Renker introduced Raul Quintana, City Architect, City of St. Petersburg to discuss the Pier Replacement Design Competition.
In 2004, an engineering report identified problems with the superstructure of the 90-year-old bridge. There were issues with spalling and rusting of the steel reinforcement in the structure that would provide a maximum of ten years’ service before it would be unsafe. The 40’ x 40’ foundation under the inverted pyramid is sound, but everything else – including most of the platform upon which the retail space is located - is in dire need of replacement. Under then-mayor Rick Baker, $50 million (the cost of replacing the span) was set aside for the project.
In 2008 a series of “visioning” session open to the public were held at St. Petersburg College in an effort to get feedback and direction from residents. It was clear that residents felt that having “something in the water” was what was historic, not the current design itself. A Task Force was formed and held 65 public meetings with the guidance of a consultant, and it was decided to open the project to an international design competition. By state mandate, firms interested in participating in the design must be determined by qualification only to form a short list. The three firms making it to this stage are then paid a $50,000 stipend to submit a design 10 weeks later. The designs were showcased at the Museum of History and online for public comment and consideration, and this feedback was considered in the final selection process.
Of the three, the “Eye” tracked with 80% negative feedback, closely followed by the “Wave” with 55% negative feedback. The “Lens” had a 72% positive feedback rating. [Editor’s note: on Friday, January 20, 2012, the jury picked the design submitted by the “Lens” team, Michael Maltzan Architecture of Los Angeles.]
The expectation is that it will be two years before the design and permitting process is complete and they will break ground; the construction should take 3½-4 years.

Thought of the Day
To be rich in admiration and free from envy, to rejoice greatly in the good of others, to love with such generosity of heart that your love is still a dear possession in absence or unkindness – these are the gifts which money cannot buy.
