Today’s Program:  Proper Protocol Today’s Speaker: Kim Goddard

As you prepare for the twenty-first century, the tactics used for landing your dream job will have to be fine-tuned and fit to face the challenges ahead. One tactic that is often overlooked, but gains respect from the first handshake, is business etiquette.

Kimberly Goddard's high-energy 21st Century Etiquette seminars are designed to give you and your fellow students the etiquette knowledge to outclass the competition. Whether it is over the phone, at a meeting or even over a business lunch, Ms. Goddard's 21st Century Etiquette principles will measurably enhance your skills to help you land that job you've always wanted!

Ms. Kimberly Goddard is the President of Proper Protocol, Inc. A certified and widely recognized protocol/etiquette consultant, Ms. Goddard is active in national speaking engagements, conventions and seminars on 21st Century Etiquette.

She makes regular appearances on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX news affiliates.

Armed with a passion for civility and a love for teaching, Kimberly Goddard founded Proper Protocol, Twenty-first Century Etiquette, as a solution to the dwindling level of basic social skills and courtesies found in far too many people.  After her daughter was born, Kim Goddard began searching for programs and activities for her that she though would help develop her into a well-rounded person.  Unfortunately the choices were too few and far between.  "I found myself reflecting back on my own childhood and realizing how times have changed. I remembered my parents sending me to charm school along with dance, singing and drama classes."  In 1991 Kim began teaching her seminars.  She had developed a unique style that makes learning etiquette fun and thoroughly enjoyable.

After establishing herself as the etiquette expert for teaching manners, Kimberly Goddard realized that the art of business etiquette was also changing.  As fast as the corporate world was embracing new technologies and younger entrepreneurs, much of past protocol was now passé or never taught to the new generations of executives who were now running multi-million dollar companies.  Kim saw the need for expanding her Proper Protocol teaching into the corporate world, as a solution for businesses that were looking to gain an edge and "Outclass the competition."

Good manners are learned through education and exposure, so please pay attention.

Holiday Party

Better late than never, Pat Kraujales announced a holiday party at Ron Holehouse’s exclusive Booker Creek Crib, 1425 Central Avenue (middle door, straight up stairs, sorry no elevator), on Thursday, December 18 at 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Pat suggested bringing canned goods for a food bank and Christmas tree ornaments to exchange. Let’s have a big turnout to share holiday cheer. All Kiwanians and their spouse or significant other are invited. There will be an open bar and hors‘d oeuvres from Harvey’s. The cost is $20 per person at the door. Please RSVP on the sign-up sheet or email Pat at pat@pkcpafirm.com or phone him at his office at 895-9059 or his cell at 742-9084. Hope to see you there!

Ding Dong……

Do you feel you have an incessant ringing in your head during Christmas shopping trips? Now is your chance to ring your own bell and volunteer for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive at the Publix in Northeast Shopping Center, 4th Street and 38th Avenue North on Thursday, December 18th. JC Russell is in charge of volunteers so please help him and sign up for this worthwhile cause. Also, donations can be made directly to JC or Steve Cunningham.

Donation Given

Ron Scoggins presented to Bobbi Gilgosh of Help-A-Child (a foster parent association) a check for $2,000.00. Two of our committees, Young Children’s Priority One and Boys and Girls, budgeted $1,000.00 each. The money is used to purchase Christmas gifts for foster children with special needs. Thank you, Bobbi, and all Kiwanians to fulfill a true feel-good story for the holidays.

Last Week at Kiwanis

Kiwanian of the day, Bob Piplitz, presented a most enlightening speaker, Dr. Rafael Miguel, Professor and Director of the Pain Medicine Program for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

Dr. Miguel gave a passionate presentation about prescription drug abuse, most notably in the state of Florida. He outlined his frustration to us by the in-action of the Florida Legislature to pass laws to curb the drug abuse. In Florida alone, over 2,200 deaths were accountable to prescription drug abuse in the first half of 2008. The drugs that are familiar to us that are commonly abused include Xanax, Codeine, Oxycontin, Methadone, Soma, and Morphine.

Dr. Miguel explained that the drugs become illegally available in the following ways:

  1. Doctor shopping – Patients go to different doctors to get multiple prescriptions.

  2. Pill Mills – disreputable doctors prescribe medicine for no reason.

  3. Internet – prescriptions are available without a consenting physician.

  4. Personal medicine cabinets – individuals raid friends and family members of drugs in their own home.

To spot a pill mill is not difficult. The offices advertise in local “rag” papers, take only cash, solicit walk-ins, and offer discounts on first visits.

Not all prescription drug abuse is criminal. Accidental overdoses have killed the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Elvis Presley, Howard Hughes, and Heath Ledger.

Dr. Miguel’s goal is to get Florida in line with 36 other states to prevent prescription drug abuse. The law he wants passed would allow a patient medical history web site only to be accessed by the treating doctor or by law enforcement if criminal activity is suspected. A salute to Dr. Miguel for his tireless efforts in volunteering to help prevent drug abuse.
