Today’s Speaker:  Pastor Tim Whipple    HAPPY EASTER

Our Easter message will be delivered by Pastor Tim Whipple.  He will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Skip Carr.  Our speaker is the lead teaching pastor at Bridgepoint Church in St. Petersburg, a non-denominational church presently meeting each week in the St. Petersburg High School.  Tim’s twenty years of pastoral experience has centered principally on the challenging area of youth ministry, a field that has honed his clear, narrative speaking style.

Most recently, he served as co-pastor of a church in Owensboro, Kentucky, after four years as Pastor of Students at First Baptist Church of St. Petersburg.  He earned his undergraduate degree in management from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and his master’s degree in Christian education from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tim lives in the Pinellas Point area of St. Petersburg with his wife, Donna, and their two children, Brennan and Bailee.  Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

TODAY’S QUIZ:  1. Who is known as the Father of the Bill of Rights?   2.  What state is both west and south of Oklahoma?   3.  What blood vessels return blood from the body to the heart?   4.  Who was Helen Keller’s teacher?   5.  Where was President Harry S. Truman born?

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS  Our program last week was presented by John Wilson, TV news anchor at Fox13 News.  He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Dick Koch.  John began his presentation by talking about himself and his family and instructed the club members to interrupt him whenever they wanted to ask him a question.  He said otherwise, he would just keep on talking.  It was twenty-six years ago when John Wilson came to St. Petersburg with his family to work at Channel 10 in the newsroom.  He chose St. Petersburg because he did not want to live in Tampa.  This feeling has not changed over the years.  He was asked what the two most stunning things were in his life and his answer was that one of these was sitting in the front row during the execution of Ted Bundy.  The other was a D-Day celebration with forty-five men who dropped into France as members of the 101st Airborne.  After making another jump during this celebration, all of them being about eighty-five years old, they approached the French village and found that the 101st Airborne, 200+ strong, had preceded them into the village and were waiting to honor these veterans as they marched into the town two abreast.  It gave our speaker a very warm and generous feeling to see these veterans so honored by the French, all holding American flags.

In answering a host of questions, John described how he has seen St. Petersburg grow in twenty-six years from a retirement community into a vibrant community.  He has seen the socio-economic development of the city.  He also mentioned that the specter of the news has changed drastically and that with absentee ownership of the TV stations, involvement in community activities is missing.  After an interesting question and answer session, John concluded his remarks by congratulation our club on its years of service to kids.  Many thanks to Dick for bringing John back for another session.

VISITORS AND GUESTS  Jeff Cavicchi was the guest of Donna Jiles and Ned Hands was the guest of Trent Shadwick.  Ken Jones hosted Deborah Sanders and Curtis Anderson from the Boley Center.  Also in attendance was Harry Benjamin from the Birmingham, Alabama club and Lt. Governor Ray Watson, a member of the Sunshine City club.  Welcome one and all. Please visit with us often.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTED  President Cathy inducted Dane Marshlack into our club membership at our meeting last week.  Dane’s sponsor was Bill Allard.  His personal information, for insertion into your Membership Roster Booklet is as follows:

Dane is President of Accent Development Company, 3221 Tyrone Blvd N., St. Petersburg, 33710.  Phone:  727-384-2222.

3-MINUTE SPEECHES PRESENTED  After securing the necessary fifty signatures on thier Kiwanis apron, two members gave three-minute speeches.

    T. J. Evans stated that he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and that he had arrived in St. Petersburg just five months ago. After talking a little about his work, T. J. got to the root of his talk by stating that he was in charge of ticket sales for the YMCA Mayor’s pancake breakfast and that he had twenty-five tickets with him for anyone who was interested in attending. He concluded his remarks by saying how he was looking forward to his membership in Kiwanis.

Mike Harting moved back to St. Petersburg with his wife seven months ago. He was born into the military and lived in umpteen cities during his first 13 years. Mike stated that he works for Outback Steak Houses and is in charge of the territory from Disney World to Key West, managing the restaurants and starting new ones. He concluded by saying how much he appreciates the camaraderie of our club.

Let’s be sure to meet both of these new members and encourage them to join one of our committees.

CASA RECEIVES YIS CHECK  Boys and Girls Committeeman George Gower presented a Youth Investment Shares check in the amount of $1,000.00 to Deborah Williams of CASA.  Ms Williams thanked the club for this support of their program to help children of abused women.  This is another fine example of your Youth Investment Share dollars at work.
