Today’s Speaker:  Todd Olson    AMERICAN STAGE

Our program today will be delivered by our own Todd Olson, Artistic Director for American Stage.  He will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Al Karnavicius.  Our speaker, who is the director of Crowns, has also directed over 100 plays, musicals, and operas, including My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra, (which he co-created) at the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, and American Stage here in St. Petersburg.  For American Stage, Todd has directed several plays which have been recognized by Weekly Planet “Best of the Bay” Awards for “Top-10 Productions of the Year” and “Best Director,” including Stones in His Pockets, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, I Am My Own Wife, and Anna in the Tropics, the highest-attended production in American Stage’s history.  In 2004, American Stage was awarded “Best Theatre Company” in the Tampa Bay-area by both Tampa Bay Magazine and The Weekly Planet.

Before coming to Florida in 2003, Todd spent three seasons as Associate Artistic Director at Tennessee Repertory Theatre where he directed productions of Wit, Cyrano de Bergerac, An Ideal Husband, How I learned to Drive, Dinner with Friends, The Miracle Worker, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Francis of Guernica, and A Christmas Carol, winning a dozen annual Nashville “Tennie” Awards for “Best Production” and “Best Director.”

Todd received his M.F.A. from the University of North Carolina, and is a graduate from the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard where he took classes with David Mamet, Peter Sellars, Anna Deveare Smith, and Robert Brustein, among others.  While at Harvard, Todd directed productions of Cervantes’ Judge of the Divorce Court, Brecht’s The Informer, Pinter’s Betrayal, Chekkhov’s The Seagull, and Shakespeare’s Coriolanus and The Winter’s Tale.

Our speaker lives in Seminole with his wife Charlotte and their children Jonas, Corinna, and May.  Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS  Our Easter program last week was presented by Pastor Tim Whipple, the teaching pastor at Bridgepoint Church in St. Petersburg.  He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Frank Ranieri.   Our speaker stated that before his appearance at our club, he visited not only our club website, but also that of Kiwanis International.  He was impressed with our Mission Statement and the many things that Kiwanis stands for.  His statement was that if everyone in the world kept these vows, it would be a much better place in which to live.

As a teaching pastor, our speaker stated that his personal goal was to help people get closer to God.  He wants to have a positive impact on the community and give a place for people to belong.  Pastor Whipple then presented a very powerful Easter message.  He read a passage from Matthew as to the true meaning of the Easter season.

After listing numerous challenges which people face in living their beliefs, our speaker concluded his remarks by using the word Simple.  The s stands for “start” and “stay focused.”  The i is to “ignore the fear.”  The m encourages us to “maximize our efforts” and the p is to “persevere.”  The l reminds us to “live the life God called us to live” and the e challenges us to “expect God to show up and equip us for eternity.”  As Pastor Whipple said, “Trust Him.”

Many thanks to Frank Ranieri and Skip Carr for bringing such a potent Easter message to our membership.
