Today’s Speaker:  Al Keck      WFTS-TV CHANNEL 28 SPORTS DIRECTOR

Our speaker today will be Al Keck, Sports Director for Channel 28, WFTS-TV.  He will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Mitch Cochran.  Al Keck has been sports director for Channel 28 covering bay area sports since 1988.  He won the Weekly Planet reader’s poll for favorite sportscaster in 2004   He states that he has been lucky enough to call the Tampa Bay area his home since 1988 and has been able to witness the birth of the Lightning, Devil Rays, Storm and USF football during this period.  But the biggest transformation that he has witnessed has been the Bucs from Bucco Bruce to Pewter Pirates.  So, put on your helmet, pull up your socks, and get ready to dive into the world of sports as it affects our local professional teams.  Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome.

TODAY’S QUIZ:  1.  Who sponsored the television show “Death Valley Days”?   2.  Who invented the fountain pen?   3.  Who was the first Democrat to be elected president after the Civil War?   4.  To what does the expression “white elephant” refer?   5.  What is the capital of Madagascar?

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS  Our program last week was presented by David A. Demers, Chief Judge of the 6th Judicial Circuit Court.  He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Mark Shames.  The Judge focused his remarks on the subject of what does being the Chief Judge mean and what does he do?  He stated that it is not being the boss of all sixty-four judges, but rather more like acting like a CEO of the judicial system.  His real job is administration.  He does not hire, fire or discipline judges and his only real authority is to assign judges.  He tries to help judges do as well as they possibly can, provides them the tools and the assistance of staff to make their job easier.  Judge Demers stated that every Chief Judge is different and approaches the job in a different way.  As he said, it is a job of human beings, not computers.

The Sixty Judicial District has seven court facilities in Pinellas County and two in Pasco County.  In making judicial assignments, Judge Demer’s most favorite jobs to which he assigns himself is to the adoption court, the drug court graduation and the investiture of new judges.  Our speaker has just one year and two months left in this present term in office and he says that he will not stand for re-election as he wants to go back to the courtroom.  Many thanks to Judge Mark Shames for bringing such an interesting speaker to our attention.

VISITORS AND GUESTS     We had a goodly number of visitors at our meeting last week.  Tommay T. Peacock was the guest of Gerald Shotts.  Kim Scott was the guest of Donna Jiles and Bill Allard had his wife Chris as his guest.  Bruce Taylor was the guest of Ron Braun and Jay Hebert was the guest of Richard Koch.  Art O’Hara was the guest of Cynthia McGowan and Susan Doll brought Derek Berset as her guest.  Welcome one and all.  Please visit with us often.

3-MINUTE SPEECHES PRESENTED    After securing the required fifty member signatures on their Kiwanis Aprons, Ron O’Neal and Angie Boswell gave their three-minute speeches to the club

Ron kicked off the proceedings by thanking his sponsor Weyman for bringing him into the club.  He stated that he was born in Winter Haven which has the only McDonalds with one arch.  He graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in psychology and stayed in Gainesville to get his degree in dentistry.  After getting married and establishing his first practice, he found that the commute caused him to leave home before his daughter was awake and to arrive back at home after she had gone to sleep so he and his wife decided to move to this side of the Bay.  He moved his practice to 9th Street North and has been there for one and one-half years.  His is a growing practice.  He is proud to be a Kiwanian.

Angie followed by stating that she entered the Real Estate market five years ago and is now manager of a title company.  She too thanked her sponsor for bringing her into the club and likewise, she is proud to be a member of the Kiwanis Club of St. Petersburg.
