Today’s Speaker:  Susanna Grady  WEDU DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Our program today will be presented by Susanna Grady, Director of Development for Public Television Station WEDU.  She will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Al Karnavicius.  Our speaker’s educational background is tremendous, beginning at Johns Hopkins University during the summer months, then studies at Goucher College, both located in Baltimore, MD.  She then earned a B.A. degree in English with a minor in Science which she followed with a M.Ed in Administration and Supervision, all at the University of Tampa.   She then continuing studies at Harvard University, was a Klingenstein Research Fellow at Columbia University where in 1993, she became president of the Klingenstein Advisory Committee.  Currently, Susanna is a part-time, Graduate School Adjunct Professor at the University of Tampa.

From 1979 to 1988, our speaker was Associate Head of School at Tampa Preparatory School when she became Head of School, a position she held until 1998.  From 1998 to the present, she has served as President of Grady Consulting Group.

Susanna’s association with WEDU began in 1988 as a Board member, Secretary from 1993-1996, Treasurer 1996-1998, Vice-chair 1998-2000, and Chairman of the Board from 2000-2002.  In 2002, our speaker became Vice President for Development and Director of the Capital Campaign for the Florida West Coast Public Broadcasting, Inc.  In this position she worked with the Board of Directors and with the President and CEO to complete the $12.5 million dollar campaign for the federally mandated transition from analog to digital production and broadcast.  She secured $900,000 in foundation funding, including a prestigious $500,000 Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant.  Also, she coordinated with other departments and with the leadership to help articulate the long range vision of WEDU and initiated an endowment campaign.  Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

TODAY’S QUIZ  1.  What is nyctophobia?   2.  What is balefire?   3.  What is pottle?   4.  In the Mother Goose rhyme, what problem did the little old lady who lived in a shoe have?   5.  What measurement gives the length of a straight line through the center of a circle?

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS      Al Keck, Sports Anchor for WFTS, Channel 28, presented our program last week.  He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Mitch Cochran.  A different approach was used by our speaker as he began his presentation.  Normally, our speakers give a short presentation and then ask for questions from the floor.  Last week, however, Al began his presentation by asking the members to ask him about anything regarding sports in the area.  As a result, questions about all of the sports entities in the Tampa Bay area were asked.  Following is a sample of the items covered.  The difference in interviews between Joe Maddon and Lou Pinella – Maddon answered the question of what time it is by telling you how to build a watch while Pinella would begin his answer and then just drop the subject in mid sentence.  The Buccaneers are still looking for another quarterback, but do not want to throw a lot of dollars into another body.  The offensive line will have the same starters, but they have solid depth because of making good draft choices that are available for back-up.  Our speaker expects that Gavin will work into the line-up quickly.  Keyshawn Johnson is quite good  while he is on the field if he gets the ball fifteen times.  Off the field, he is a pain in the neck.  The new Bucs training facility is huge and very impressive.  They should be ready to move into this facility in October.  Regarding the Rays, Vince Naomoli got frustrated as the area did not step up to support Major League Baseball as he expected.  The new ownership is as different as night and day.  It is a fun team to watch and winning will come sooner rather than later.  Our speaker thinks that they will change their name – maybe to “Stingrays.”

The Lightning will have salary cap problems because of the three high-priced players they have under contract.  They desperately need a goalie, but good ones do not come cheap.  The question of who will be the USF quarterback has still to be decided.  USF basketball needs to get good solid players who will stay around and play for four to five years and not leave for the NBA after one or two years.  This will help them improve their record in the Big East.  Finally, Al’s station does a good job in covering high school sports.  The problem is that he used to get four to five minutes to do his sports reporting, but is now limited to two minutes.  This has greatly curtailed what can be reported.  Many thanks to Mitch for bringing this insight into the sports programs in the Tampa Bay area.

VISITORS AND GUESTS      Dave Millard was the guest of Jane Baldwin and Lorin Bridge had his daughter Lisa as his guest.  Welcome, and please visit with us again.

NEW MEMBER GIVES THREE-MINUTE SPEECH    After securing the required fifty signatures on his Kiwanis Apron, Richard Carpenter told us that because Doug Lampe sponsored him into the club and that Doug’s father Rusty was his friend, he felt like he had two strikes against himself as he became a member of our club.  He reported that he has three children, all of whom have finished college which caused him and his wife to decide to set up a foundation to help kids go to college.  The only requirement is that the recipients must agree to work hard!  Richard earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from USF, and after working for a firm as a Retirement Plan Consultant for a number of years, decided to open his own firm in the Retirement Plan Consultant business.  Regarding his membership in Kiwanis, Richard is dedicated to being of service to the community.  Let’s all be sure to get Richard active on one or more of our community service committees.

FAMILY RESOURCES, INC. RECEIVES GRANT      Boys and Girls Committee Chair Susan Doll presented a check in the amount of $500 to Jane Harper of Family Resources, Inc. for use in their weekly laundry night for homeless families.  This is another fine example of your YIS dollars at work!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ALL CHILDREN’S TELETHON JUNE 3 – 4      Candice DeSam issued an appeal for volunteers to help in the parking at the All Children’s Telethon on June 3rd and 4th.  A sign-up sheet is being passed around so you can pick the hours you will be able to help.  This is another great example of Kiwanis helping the children in our community.

JIM FISCHER BIRTHDAY BASH REMINDER    Bob Byelick announced that the invitations to the bash are in the mail for the Jim Fischer Birthday Bash which is scheduled for June 10th at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.  Please respond when you get your invite!  It is for a great cause.

ITEMS STILL NEEDED FOR FISCHER BIRTHDAY BASH    John Biesinger reminded the club that a Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with the annual Jim Fischer Birthday Bash which is scheduled for June 10th at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.  Members are being asked to secure donated items from baskets to any large ticket items to help raise additional dollars for the Jim Fischer Scholarships.  Please bring the items to our club meeting on June 6th so they can be properly displayed at the Bash on the 10th.  Contact either John or big Al for details.  Here is another way you can help make this year’s bash an even bigger success!

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION SET FOR MONTREAL    It is still not too late to register for the upcoming Kiwanis International Convention which is scheduled for Montreal on June 28 to July 2, 2006.  Members who go on the junket do not have to attend any of the scheduled meetings at the convention unless they want to as the club has two designated representatives in the form of President Cathy and President-elect Mitch.  A good time for all attendees is assured.  President-elect Mitch will take the entire group from our club to dinner at least one time during the convention.  So, start making your plans to attend NOW.  June 28 is not far off.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:      O God, forasmuch as without thee we are not able to please thee, mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts, increase in each of us the virtues of duty, honor and loyalty that we may serve our country, those who are dependent upon us, and those in need.  Amen.
