Speaker:  Maria Kadau PINELLAS EDUCATION FOUNDATION & JIM FISCHER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Today’s program will be all about scholarships.  Our speaker will be Maria Kadau, the Assistant Vice President of development for the Pinellas Education Foundation.  She will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Bob Byelick.  Maria works with businesses, civic groups, private and corporate foundations and government entitles and manages the county’s classroom grant programs.

Since 1986, the Foundation has raised $65 million dollars for enhanced educational opportunities for students and educators in Pinellas County.  Located in Largo, it was recently named the #1 public education foundation in the United States.

Maria received two Bachelors degrees from Salisbury University in Maryland, and then joined the U.S. Army.  She is a former member of the Maryland and Florida Army National Guard and of the Rotary Club of St. Petersburg West.  She is active with Anona United Methodist Church in Indian Rocks Beach and serves on the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of St. Petersburg.  Our speaker and her husband David, a firefighter-paramedic with the City of St. Petersburg, live in Largo with their two daughters.  Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

TODAY’S QUIZ    1.  Who was the first U.S. president to ride on a train?   2.  In what year did Martin Luther King Jr. win the Nobel Peace Prize?   3.  Which book of the Bible says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”?   4.  What were the names of the three Cunningham children on the television show “Happy Days”?   5.  What is the first shot in a game of pool called?

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS      Susanna Grady, Director of Development for WEDU presented a very interesting insight into PBS television station WEDU at our meeting last week.  She was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Al KarnaviciusWEDU was first licensed in 1958.  It was not very well organized and its programming left a little bit to be desired.  However, in time, these things have all improved.  Today WEDU presents a complete line-up of interesting programs for people of all ages.  In 1965, President Johnson signed legislation which began the PBS radio and television stations in the United States.  In 1966, partial funding was granted by the Federal Government for these stations, though even today, 85% of the funding comes from local fund raising and only 15% from either state or Federal sources.

The station covers sixteen counties, but receives the greatest financial support form listeners in Pinellas County, followed by Sarasota County and then Hillsborough.

Our speaker than presented a Power Point presentation which reviewed the type of programming found on WEDU:  and offers a variety of programs which appeal to different age groups.  The Federal Government is forcing all television stations to transmit a digital signal by the year 2009.  This transition has cost WEDU 12.5 million dollars to accomplish.

As our speaker said, WEDU viewers are well educated, mature, affluent citizens who believe in their community.  The station is owned and operated by the citizens of the West Coast of Florida.  Many thanks to Al for bringing this most interesting program to our attention.

VISITORS AND GUESTS   We had NO guests last week.  Bring a friend to our next meeting.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ALL CHILDREN’S TELETHON      Candice DeSam issued an appeal for volunteers to help in the parking at the All Children’s Telethon on June 3rd and 4th.  Duties will include directing other telethon volunteers to the correct parking area and then to direct them to the Education and Conference Center (ECC) on the hospital campus.  Volunteers are encouraged to wear a hat and sunscreen for daytime shifts, bring a folding chair, shorts are OK, and a Kiwanis shirt is preferred.  The hospital will provide safety vests, flags, flash lights and plenty of soda, cold water and snacks.  For more information, contact Bill Horton at 757-4407 or Heather at 767-45292.  This is another opportunity for you to help children in our community.  A sign-up sheet is being passed around so you can pick the hours you will be able to help.  All Children’s Hospital is located at 801 – 6th Street South.  Parking for volunteers and where they will be working is at 5th Street South and 6th Avenue South in an area marked “volunteer parking.”
