His many memberships include membership in the state, local and national Bar Associations, Past President of the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association, Member of the National District Attorneys Association, Past President, First Step Corporation, Chairman, Pinellas County Substance Abuse Advisory Board, Pinellas/Pasco Juvenile Justice Board, S.A.V.E. TODAY’S QUIZ    1.  Who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 at a theater in Washington, D.C.?  2.  Which saint was the mother of Constantine the Great?   3.  Mountain State is the nickname of what state?   4.  Who penned the words, “God’s in his heaven/All’s right with the world?   5.  In the Bible, who asked, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS      Our program last week we a dual program which covered Scholarship programs funded through the Pinellas Education Foundation and our own Jim Fischer Scholarship program which has partnered with the Doorway Scholarships offered by the Foundation.  Maria Kadau, Assistant Vice President of development for the Pinellas Education Foundation presented a very thorough talk on the Foundation.  She was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Bob Byelick who gave a rapid fire presentation on the Jim Fischer Scholarship program.

Maria explained that the Foundation has presented over sixty-five million dollars in scholarships since its inception in 1986.  Pinellas County has 115,000 students in K-12 of which approximately 40,000 are classified as “at risk” students as they live below the poverty level.  The Foundation operates on the thesis that a good education will affect society in a positive way.  Doorway Scholarships are available to students in the 4th to 9th grades who agree to maintain passing grades, have no discipline problems and stay drug free.  To apply, the student goes on-line and answers a series of 45 yes or no questions.  This makes them legible to participate.  Each school makes their own selection of students as the program averages 3,000 students on scholarship. Unfortunately, not all “at risk” students can participate because the available dollars are limited.  What the Foundation raises is spent on scholarships.  The success rate for this program stands at 85% of the students in the 9th through 12th grades who participate in the program.  Those students not planning on going to college can use their scholarship money in the technical/vocational school program.

Bob Byelick then presented a short explanation of the Fischer Scholarship program – who Jim Fischer was and how this program came into being.  Bob gave the history of the program and explained how in 2004 two scholarships were awarded when they found out about partnering with the Mayor of St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Education Foundation.  With this partnership, in 2005, twenty-three Doorway Scholarships were presented.  What money is raised goes into that year’s scholarships.  This is another year and there is another Jim Fischer Golf Tournament and another Jim Fischer Birthday Bash, both of which will provide the funds for the 2006 scholarships.  Bob thanked the sponsors for the Birthday Bash and pointed out that Jim’s legacy continues “through us.”  Many thanks to Bob for bringing such a full and complete program about the Jim Fischer Scholarship aims and objectives.

VISITORS AND GUESTS      Eddie Lee from the Gulf Beaches club was our only visitor last week.  Eddie will be our Lt. Governor for the 2006-2007 program year.  Welcome, and please visit with us often!

Harper, President/CEO

HEADS UP   President Cathy announced that the June 13 club meeting will be a field trip to the new Hospice facility on 1st Avenue South at 31st Street.  Lunch will be served and a tour of the facility is on the agenda.  Plan now to attend.

JIM FISCHER BIRTHDAY BASH REMINDER    Bob Byelick announced that the invitations to the bash are in the mail for the Jim Fischer Birthday Bash which is scheduled for June 10th at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.  Please respond when you get your invite!  It is for a great cause.

ITEMS STILL NEEDED FOR FISCHER BIRTHDAY BASH    John Biesinger reminded the club that a Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with the annual Jim Fischer Birthday Bash which is scheduled for June 10th at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.  Members are being asked to secure donated items from baskets to any large ticket items to help raise additional dollars for the Jim Fischer Scholarships.  Please bring the items to our club meeting on June 6th so they can be properly displayed at the Bash on the 10th.  Contact either John or big Al for details.  Here is another way you can help make this year’s bash an even bigger success!

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION SET FOR MONTREAL    It is still not too late to register for the upcoming Kiwanis International Convention which is scheduled for Montreal on June 28 to July 2, 2006.  Members who go on the junket do not have to attend any of the scheduled meetings at the convention unless they want to as the club has two designated representatives in the form of President Cathy and President-elect Mitch.  A good time for all attendees is assured.  President-elect Mitch will take the entire group from our club to dinner at least one time during the convention.  So, start making your plans to attend NOW.  June 28 is not far off.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:     Almighty God, who givest us all the talents to accomplish the tasks laid upon us, we thank thee for the faithful service of our officers and directors.  Continue, we beseech thee, thy mercies to them, guiding them to decisions and actions pleasing unto thee.  Amen.
