Today’s Speaker: Natalie Washington THE HOSPICE
OF THE FLORIDA SUNCOAST
Our program today is a field trip to visit the new Hospice
Community Service Center on 1st Avenue South and 31st
Street. Natalie Washington, Coordinator of our Faith in Action
and Teen programs will speak about Hospice’s work within the faith
community and teenage volunteers. She will be introduced by our
Kiwanian-of-the-day Chris Jordan. Following Natalie’s
presentation, there will be an opportunity to tour the building where
folks will meet other staff and have a chance to ask questions.
The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast was founded in 1977 by a group
of volunteers concerned with the unique needs of people and families
dealing with severe, chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The Hospice
is a community based not for profit organization that cares for all
people who request its services regardless of race, creed, financial
status, or walk of life. Their mission and promise to the community is
simple – to provide the best care possible, 24 hours a day, seven
days a week for all whose lives are affected by a serious illness,
condition or death.
This new Hospice St. Petersburg Community Service Center is home to
not only several interdisciplinary hospice patient and family care
teams, serving over 700 patients and their families each day, but also a
comprehensive range of programs and services in response to the needs of
neighbors, friends and families throughout the communities of St.
Petersburg including a Center for living and Wellness, a Center for
Community, a Faith in Action and HYPE (Hospice Youth Providing
Encouragement), a Center for Loss and Healing, a Center for career
Development, and an AIDS Service Association of Pinellas. Let’s give
our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

1. What is the official language of Brazil? 2. What does a cooper
do? 3. What is the easternmost city in the United States? 4.
Draughts is another name for what game? 5. The game of chess
originated in what country?
LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Because our announced speaker, Bernie McCabe, was unable to
attend our meeting because of a family medical problem, Bruce
Bartlett, Chief Assistant to the State Attorney presented our
program. He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Mark Shames.
Our speaker, who was born and raised in Pinellas County, began his
presentation by stating that in the seven and one-half years that he has
been associated with the State Attorney’s office, he was watched it grow
in size from eleven assistants to today where 155 lawyers work on
prosecuting the State cases in the Sixth Judicial District. They handle
over 100,000 cases a year. There is always at least one of the State
Attorneys on call twenty-four hours a day to give assistance to the
local law enforcement agencies in the district.
In an effort to try and cut down on
the crime rate, and to make the community a safer place to live, the
State Attorney’s office has instituted a number of diversionary
programs. Among these is a school diversion program for Middle School
children, another for debt problems, one for bad check writers, another
for drug and alcohol abusers, one for juvenile crimes, a new one for
gang-related crimes and another for truancy intervention cases.
Our speaker then opened up the floor
for a very spirited question and answer session. Many thanks to Mark
Shames for bringing such an interesting and informative speaker to our
meeting.
VISITORS AND GUESTS
We had two guests in attendance at our meeting last week. Jack
Packer was the guest of Louis Murphy and Stephanie Nolden was the guest
of Jane Baldwin. Welcome, and please visit with us often!
FISCHER BIRTHDAY BASH SLATED TO BE
SUCCESSFUL Bob Byelick and John Biesinger
reported that 140 people are signed up to attend the Jim Fischer
Birthday Bash at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Also, both the live and
silent auctions have many great articles for the participants to bid
on. We will have a more comprehensive report on how the bash went in
our bulletin next week.
CANDICE DeSAM THANKS MEMBERS
Candice publicly thanked the members who participated in the
service project to help park cars at the recent All Children’s Hospital
Telethon on June 2nd and 3rd. This is another
fine example of Kiwanians doing good things for children.
CYNDI MULLIGAN GIVES 3-MINUTE SPEECH
After securing the required fifty member signatures on her Kiwanis
Apron, Cyndi told us about herself in a condensed three-minute speech.
She grew up in Temple Terrace and is a graduate of the University of
Florida. For many years, Advertising and Marketing has been a large
part of her business life and currently Cyndi is a Financial Planner.
Let’s all be sure to see that Cyndi gets active on one or more of our
many committees. We hope that her association with our club will be
long and fruitful.
HEADS UP The July Board of Directors Meeting
will be held on Tuesday, July 12 at 5:15 p.m. instead of the regular
first Tuesday of the month. The Program Committee will be on the same
night at 7:00 p.m. Please make this notation in your calendar.
INTERNATIONAL
CONVENTION IN MONTREAL It is still not too late
to register for the upcoming Kiwanis International Convention which is
scheduled for Montreal on June 28 to July 2, 2006. Members who go on
the junket do not have to attend any of the scheduled meetings at the
convention unless they want to as the club has two designated
representatives in the form of President Cathy and President-elect
Mitch. A good time for all attendees is assured. President-elect Mitch
will take the entire group from our club to dinner at least one time
during the convention. So, start making your plans to attend NOW. June
28 is not far off.
PRAYER OF THE DAY:
O God, you heal broken lives and bind up the wounds of your sorrowing
people. Look in tender compassion on our friends whose joy has been
turned into sadness. Comfort them with your eternal Word, drawing them
closer to each other by their sorrow. Fill their souls with the peace
of your presence. Grant them a vision of life where all sorrow and
tears will be wiped away in the joys which you have prepared for us. So
live with them and be their God, until the day breaks and the shadows
flee away. Amen.
