Today’s Speaker:  Captain Danny Cooper, USAF   THE OTHER SIDE OF WAR

Our speaker today is Capt. Danny Cooper, chief of public affairs and, as such, is the primary spokesman for MacDill AFB.  He will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Dick Koch.  Cooper recently participated in the “War on Terror” by going to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa.  His mission was to convince the local population that Americans are not bad people.  Sometimes this is a difficult message to get across when all the locals hear about is what happens in the war to their north.

Today he is going to speak with us about U.S. efforts to build schools, potable water treatment plants, and medical programs primarily for the children of the region.

Cooper is a graduate of Kathleen High School in Lakeland.  He went to the Citadel in Charleston, SC, and received his commission in the Air Force through the ROTC program.  He has been assigned to Hurlburt Field near Eglin AFB in the Florida panhandle, and Barksdale AFB in Louisiana before coming to MacDill in 2004.  He and his wife, Jenny, live in Land O’ Lakes.  Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

NO MEETING NEXT WEEK!  HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE 4TH OF JULY!

TODAY’S QUIZ    1.  On the television show “Gilligan’s Island,” what was the name of the ship that set sail for a three-hour tour?   2.  Where is Rocky Mountain National Park?   3.  What is a baby kangaroo called?   4.  Who played Laura Ingalls on the television show “Little House on the Prairie’?   5.  In what year did the Ken doll make its debut?

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS      Our program last week was presented by Deputy Mayor Goliath J. Davis, III, who talked to us about Midtown Economic Development.  He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Mark Shames.  Our speaker began his power point presentation by thanking the club for its many efforts to improve the life of our children here in St. Petersburg.  He then proceeded to talk about the progress which has been made in bringing the midtown area to life.  The thrust of the development efforts was aimed at supporting existing businesses in the area, encouraging entrepreneurship, creating jobs which pay a living wage, and encouraging businesses to locate in the midtown area.  Mayor Baker’s view for St. Petersburg is to make this a seamless city where equal facilities and opportunities exist for all of our citizens.

Deputy Mayor Davis’s approach was to first address the negative perceptions which currently existed in that area, market the midtown assets which currently existed, take potential business leaders on midtown tours and paint an enticing picture in the St. Petersburg Annual Report which might attract business partners to locate in the midtown area.

A lot has been accomplished in the past three years.  SPC has created a midtown campus, a new Post Office has been built and is operating, the Carter G. Woodson Museum is open for business, and the Royal Theater, Johnnie Ruth Clark Health Center, Manhattan Casino, Sun Trust Bank, Paradise Plaza and others have all opened for business.  Our speaker’s current goal now is to create affordable housing for the residents of midtown.  City funds have been made available to help residents to find and buy affordable housing and the area has been designated as an Enterprise Zone which allows for tax breaks for investors in midtown.  Many thanks to Mark Shames for bringing this most interesting insight into the progress being made in the midtown area.

VISITORS AND GUESTS    All of our guests last week were guests of our speaker, Goliath Davis.  These guests were Tyna Middleton, Lakishee Williams and Dana Battle.  Welcome, and please consider joining our club.

CHARLES STUART BECOMES A GRANDFATHER AGAIN  Charles Stuart announced the birth of a granddaughter, Katherine Grace Stuart.  She was born on Monday, June 19, 2006 and she was 20 ˝  inches long and weighed in at 8lbs. 9 oz.  Her parents, Brooke and Lori Stuart are both doing fine.  As is our tradition, a collection was taken up to start a bank account for this new citizen which the grandfather must double.  $135.00 was collected which when added to the $270.00 which grandpa will provide, gives young Katherine a bank account of $405.00.

THREE NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED      President Cathy inducted Homer A. Booth, Stephanie E. Holden and Jeffrey T. Cavicchi into membership in our club at our meeting last week.

Let’s all be sure to meet and greet these new members, sign their Kiwanis Aprons and be sure that they get signed up on one or more of our many committees.  We hope that your association with our club will be long and fruitful.

HEADS UP      The July Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 11 at 5:15 p.m. instead of the regular first Tuesday of the month.  The Program Committee will follow on the same night at 7:00 p.m.  Please make this notation in your calendar.

Grandpa on the 4th of July –

It’s true he’d really rather be back on the porch in the shade,
his old hat brim over his eyes, at his hand, cold lemonade.

But here he stands in the glaring sun, band’s drums still far away,
waiting with grandson’s hand in his for the flag to pass this day.

He has served his country’s flag before; his son is serving it now,
Grandpa must teach grandson alone to salute the flag, and how.

                                  -B.R. Culbertson.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:     We thank thee, O Lord, for thy continued blessing to our people.  We thank thee for the pioneers who opened the way and for those who laid the foundations for our national life.  Grant that we may ever dedicate ourselves to the unfinished work they so nobly advanced and give increased devotion to the cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion.  Amen.

LAST WEEK’S QUIZ:    1.   The Miami Hurricanes allowed the least scoring against the defense two years ago.   2.  Dartmouth was the NCAA Football champion of the Ivy League last year.   3.  Don Rickles is nicknamed “The Merchant of Venom.”   4.  A portinger is a shallow bowl for cereal.   5.  Red Miller, in Super Bowl XII, was the first ever Denver Bronco head coach to lead the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl appearance.
