Today’s Speaker: Jim Leavitt
2006 USF FOOTBALL
Coach Leavitt will give us our annual analysis of the USF
Bulls. He will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Charles
Stuart. Jim Leavitt came to the University of South Florida as its
first Head Coach in football. During these past ten plus years, our
speaker and his staff have been challenged to design, recruit and teach
the football prospects at the university, not only how to play football
at the college level and win, but to win in Division I. This year is
the second year of testing the Division I waters.
From the time he was an all-star athlete at Dixie Hollins High
School to his ultra-successful stint as co-defensive coordinator with
Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops at Kansas State, our speaker has left his
mark on a string of programs that either began from scratch or initiated
a marvelous transformation to success under his leadership.
Jim began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the
University of Missouri in 1978-79. In 1980-81, he served as Defensive
Coordinator at the University of Dubuque. In 1982, he was Special Teams
Coordinator at Morningside (Iowa) College. 1983-87 found our speaker
promoted to Defensive Coordinator at Morningside College. In 1989 he
served as Graduate Assistant at the University of Iowa. 1990-91 found
him serving as the Linebacker Coach at Kansas State University and from
1992-95 he was the Defensive Coordinator/Linebacker Coach at Kansas
State University.
Our speaker was born December 5, 1956 in Harlingen, Texas. He grew
up in St. Petersburg where he attended Dixie Hollins High School. A
two-sport all-star performer in football and baseball, he was All-Big
Eight in both sports. It was at Missouri that he met his wife, the
former Denise Jaeger. The couple resides at Harbor Island in Tampa.
Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Our program on June 27th was presented by Captain
Danny Cooper, USAF, chief of Public affairs and as such, is the
primary spokesman for MacDill AFB. He was introduced by our
Kiwanian-of-the-day Dick Koch. Even when his power point
presentation failed to operate, the Captain did an outstanding job of
presenting his material with no notes in an extemporaneous fashion. He
explained that he had the opportunity to be on a mission to the horn of
Africa that will never make the news. He stated that the countries
which captured the hearts and minds of the young children would be the
victor in a peaceful world in years to come. It is important that our
country captures their hearts and minds before the terrorists show up.
Our country is not blowing things up, we are building things that they
desperately need. All of the nations which are helping in this effort
are partners. Their projects include well-drilling as water is the most
precious commodity that there is in that area. Also, building schools
for the young children and providing both medical and veterinarian
assistance programs beings immediate help to the area.
There are only seven countries in the
world which still suffer with polio problems. Five of these countries
are in the horn of Africa. The polio vaccination effort brought smiles
to the parents of these vaccinated children. In just four days, 475
children were vaccinated against this disease.
In stating what he learned in his
forty-five day mission, Captain Cooper emphasized that the War on Terror
is a marathon, not a sprint and that the United States is better at it
now than it was five years ago. The military is doing the best it can
with the assigned task. All of the servicemen and women are volunteers
and they see the pride on the parents faces as their children are being
cared for. There is hope and as Captain Cooper said, “we are going to
win!”
Many thanks to Dick for bringing
Captain Cooper to our club. It helped all of us to be proud that we are
Americans!
VISITORS AND GUESTS
Stan Shaver had his daughter Sally Rood as his guest. Ted Wall brought
the Cadet Commander at Admiral Farragut Academy, U. S. Marine Major
General Robert Flanagan, (Ret.) as his guest. Dick Koch entertained
John Ellis as his guest and Frank Ranieri brought John Marc Mulkey to
the meeting as his guest. Also, Kiwanians Ray and Valerie Hoeneisen
from the Pinellas Park Club graced us with their attendance. Welcome
one and all! Please visit with us again.
KIWANIS FACTS – DID YOU KNOW?
The finance committee’s primary responsibility is preparing the
budget for approval by the board of directors. The committee should
review potential income, figured conservatively. It should listen to
and tabulate suggested needs presented by the club’s other committees
and incorporate the club’s total financial picture in showing how much
money the club needs to raise to carry out its programs. Remember:
Finance is one of the most important aspects of club administration. It
is important that a club develop and maintain a comprehensive budget and
that financial policies be adopted to protect the club in every way.
MEA CULPA In
