Today’s Speaker: Dick Fletcher CHANNEL 10 NEWS CHIEF
METEOROLOGIST
Our program today will be presented by Dick Fletcher,
Channel 10 News Chief Meteorologist. He will be introduced by our
Kiwanian-of-the-day Bob Piplitz. Our speaker has earned the
American Meteorological Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist
designation. It is professional recognition of the quality of his
broadcasts. He has served the Tampa Bay Area since 1980. As Chief
Meteorologist, Fletcher is responsible for the overall operation of the
Weather Center and anchoring the weathercasts for Ten News at 4:00, 6:00
and 11:00 each weekday.
He has flown reconnaissance aircraft missions into three hurricanes
and has made fifteen different penetrations into the eye of the storm.
In 1987, he was honored by The American Meteorological Society with an
award for Outstanding Service by a Broadcast Meteorologist. He was
presented the distinguished service award by the national hurricane
conference in 2003 for his career leadership efforts in hurricane
preparedness. He also received the Media award from the Governor’s
Hurricane conference in 1993. Fletcher also works closely with the
Pinellas County Coalition for the Homeless, forecasting the need for
cold night shelters.
Our speaker holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the
University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Certificate of Broadcast
Meteorology from Mississippi State University. He has done advanced
studies in College of Marine Science at the University of South
Florida. He lives in the Tampa Bay area with his wife. Let’s give our

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Our program last week was presented by John B. (J.B.) Gaskins,
Vice President Donor Recruitment/Donor Services for Florida Blood
Services. He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day Steve
Cunningham. John began his presentation by stating that he is a
former Kiwanian of the Birmingham, Alabama club and that he would be
interested in joining us in membership. It was obvious that our speaker
is a quick-witted individual as his comeback to questions and statements
were always on the humorous side.
Florida Blood Services use 750 pints
of blood per day to provide the many health facilities with their basic
blood needs. As he said, blood banking is a very serious work. A
person can donate whole blood every eight weeks and platelets every two
weeks. With the need being so high, our speaker’s job of recruiting
donors is very important if sufficient blood is going to be available as
it is needed. In the course of his presentation, John zeroed in on the
need for O Negative blood as it can be used for any recipient. It has
universal use. Also, the plasma from AB Negative blood is also
classified as a universal donor. Our speaker ended his presentation
with a very spirited and informative question and answer period. Many
thanks to Steve for bringing such a timely program to our attention.
VISITORS AND GUESTS
Dennis Demarino was a guest of Mike Humlicek and James and
Erin Hunter were guests of Bill Allard. Also, Ron Holehouse
brought his son Jake to our meeting as his guest. Welcome one
and all! Please make this your Kiwanis home.
THANKS TO SILENT AUCTION DONORS
Bob Byelick thanked the following people for their donations to the
Silent Auction which was held at the Jim Fischer Birthday Bash. Your
editor apologizes if any names were left out. Those making donations
were: Todd Olson, Lou Averbeck, Jane Baldwin, Skip Carr, Steve Kirby,
Click Slocumb, Don Munafo, Lorin Bridge, Kim Horstman, Scott Boyle,
Worth Blackwell and Bob’s wife and daughter. The donations made by
these people added significantly to the total dollars raised at the
event.
THANKS TO DONORS TO SUSAN
A total of nine hundred sixty dollars was donated by club members to
help Susan Doll take her two children out West to visit her son who was
unable to attend her eldest son’s memorial Service. Your donations are
greatly appreciated. This shows how big the heart of the Kiwanis Club
of St. Petersburg really is.
BOOK DRIVE FOR DAY CARE
Here is a great opportunity to help children! Happy Workers has a
Literacy Fair scheduled for Saturday, September 23rd. Please
bring one or two NEW books to our meeting during the month of
August. All books will be given to Happy Workers Day care Center for
their Literacy Fair. Let’s show Happy Workers how many books we can
provide. Also, please reserve September 23rd for helping out
at the Literacy Fair. You will be glad you did.
KIWANIS FACTS – DID YOU KNOW?
According to Article V, Sections 2 and 3 of the Standard Form for
Club Bylaws, active and senior members “shall maintain regular
attendance at club meetings and shall actively participate in club
activities.” The club bylaws also note that the board of directors
shall review semiannually the attendance and participation record of
each member and, at its discretion, suspend any active or senior member
who, without excuse, fails to regularly attend club meetings or actively
participate in club activities. The club secretary should notify such a
member of his or her suspension in writing. Any suspended active or
senior member, according to Section 4 of Article V, upon applying to the
board of directors for reinstatement and expressing a willingness to
meet club standards, may, by majority vote of the board of directors, be
reinstated within 30 days from the date of the written notice of
suspensions. If such a member is not reinstated within 30 days, the
individual’s membership is terminated.

this land of the free. Teach us good Lord, to serve our country and to
serve thee as thou deservest; to give and not to count the cost; to
fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to
labor and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do thy
will. Amen.
