Today’s Speaker: Marian Scorza DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
PLANS & PROJECTS
Our program today will be presented by Marian Scorza, Public
Information Officer for the Department of Transportation’s District
Seven Office. She will be introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-Day Bob
Piplitz. District Seven covers Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough,
Pasco and Pinellas Counties.
Our speaker began her career with the Department of Transportation in
1986 before the District Seven Office even existed. At that time, the
Tampa Bay area only had an urban office. Marian was one of the first
ten people hired and now the District Office has over 600 people.
Before her career with the Department, she worked for WEDU-Channel 3
and WUSF-TV Channel 16 in the Public Information Department. She also
hosted and produced a local exercise show on Channel 16.
Ms. Scorza graduated from Penn State in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in Humanities, specializing in Journalism and Communications.
Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Our program last week was presented by Dick Fletcher, Channel 10
News Chief Meteorologist. He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-Day,
Bob Piplitz. Dick began his presentation by thanking our club and all
others like it who are making St. Petersburg a better place to live. He
stated that if employers do not have a hurricane disaster plan for their
employees, they might find that they do not have any employees available
to work after a hurricane. Individually, everyone needs to have a
hurricane preparedness plan in addition to one by their employer. In
answer to the question as to how likely is it that the next hurricane
will hit our area, our speaker replied that he has “no idea.” The last
category 3 hurricane to hit this area was in October 1921 and it
produced a fifteen foot tide. Dick then went on to describe some of the
other historical hurricanes that visited here previous to 1921. As to
when the next one will come, no one knows. Dick stated that the
destruction of Fort Brooke in Tampa during the 1921 storm brought many
skilled craftsmen to the area to rebuild the Fort. That was probably the
first influx of people who settled here.
June/July and October are the three months in which a hurricane is most
likely to hit this area and unless the storm forms in the Gulf of
Mexico, we would probably have only three days to make our evacuation
plans effective. A question was asked regarding the success of using
weather modification to affect a hurricane. Our speaker stated that the
probability is that it will not work. He reported that hurricanes are
more powerful and more sophisticated than previously thought.
World-wide, there is an average of 80 hurricanes per year. Here in the
Gulf of Mexico basin, we average ten such storms or 12% of the
world-wide total. The greatest danger comes from the storm surge. From
1970 to 2004, most people evacuated storm-surge areas which resulted in
fewer fatalities. However, in 2005, more people died as a result of that
year’s hurricanes because they did not evacuate from the storm surge
areas. His advice is, you get the notice of the projected storm surge
and if you are in an area where that could affect you, you need to
evacuate. Many thanks to Bob for bringing this most timely program to
our attention.
