Today’s Speaker: Andy Fobes TAMPA PORT
AUTHORITY DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS
Tampa Port Authority is Florida’s largest
port, handling nearly fifty million tons of cargo a year. Its
strategic location provides the most direct route to Mexico, Latin
America and the Caribbean and is the closest full service U.S. port to
the Panama Canal. A growing transit hub for corporate and cultural
operations, it requires a team of skilled marketing and communications
professionals to conduct its business locally and internationally. Our
speaker today, Andy Fobes, Director of Public Relations, joined the
Port’s team May 30, 2006. He came to the Port of Tampa from the Port of
New Orleans, where he served as Chief of Protocol, handling foreign
visitors and dignitaries and a wide variety of special events. Prior to
working in New Orleans, he served as Public Information Officer for the
Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulfport, where he directed all
communications efforts. His 16 years of public relations experience
includes media relations, speech writing, publication design, media
buying and event planning in both the private and public sectors, where
he has served as liaison for corporate, municipal and government
affairs. He has served on various core committees for project
development, policy and key industry-related efforts. As Marketing and
Development Director for Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast, Inc.
from 1996 to 1999, he cultivated skills in fundraising and corporate
partnerships.
Forbes graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Journalism (1992) and an
M.S. in Public Relations (1994), both from the University of Southern
Mississippi. He is a member of the Public Relations Society of America
(PRSA), the Public Relations Committee of the American Association of
Port Authorities (AAPA), and was most recently Secretary-Treasurer and
Board Member for the Inland Rivers, Ports & Terminals Association (IRPT).
Forbes was awarded Rotary International’s Service Above Self Award in
1995 and was named Rotarian of the Year in 1997. He is a Tampa native
and is glad to come full circle, back to this very special city. Please
give Mr. Fobes a warm Kiwanis welcome as he acquaints us with the
varied endeavors of Tampa Port Authority!

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Last week’s program featured country singer/songwriter Chad
Brock. Kiwanian-Of-The-Day Mitch Cochran introduced us to
Chad by showing us his music video “Yes!,” a romantic country music
chart-topper he wrote and performed. Promising an inside look at the
music industry, Chad took us on a journey from his childhood in
Ocala to the country music world of Nashville where he wrote songs and
performed at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge on lower Broadway, hoping to be
discovered. Finally, a friend introduced him to Danny Key at Warner
Brothers Records and two and a half years later, he was offered the
record deal he’d been working toward. As one could expect in the life of
a struggling artist, however, there were obstacles and detours along the
way. At one point, the president of Warner Brothers sent Danny Key to
tell him WB wanted to market him as the “Singing Wrestler” and he’d have
to compete in World Championship Wrestling bouts. He toured with the WCW
for three years, but he was a singer at heart, so when Chad suffered an
injury, he saw his opportunity to quit wrestling and resume singing
full-time. His first record came out in 1998 and the hits kept coming.
Nevertheless, because of the expense involved in marketing new
performers, which had to be recouped, the bus, gas, insurance and the
many musicians, producers, agents and tour organizers who had to be paid
out of record profits, it was hard to make the big money. Remarried with
children, Chad decided to leave the road and come back to Florida, where
he now co-hosts the morning show on 99.5 WQYK and performs every Friday
night at the Dallas Bull in Tampa.
Brookwood Home Receives Kiwanis Boys and Girls Committee Check
President Cathy Swanson presented a $500 check to Diane Sunden to
help provide “back to school” shoes for the 40 girls housed in the
therapeutic residence at Brookwood. Brookwood provides housing,
academic and life skills training to abused, homeless and troubled girls
ages 13-18. This was another fine example of our Youth Investment
Shares at work.
