Tuesday, September 5, 2006 No. 48 Vol. 84 Today’s
Speaker: Jenny Shaw BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS
Our program today will be presented by Jenny Shaw, Public
Relations Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters serving Pinellas,
Hernando and Citrus Counties. She will be introduced by our
Kiwanian-of-the-day Mitch Cochran. Jenny joined Big Brothers Big
Sisters just over a year ago and devotes her time to educating and
bringing awareness to the community about the youth mentoring
organization through presentations and the sharing of special Big
Brother Big Sister match stories. Our speaker coordinates all media
opportunities for the agency as well as designs and produces many of the
communication tools used to keep the public and affiliates of Big
Brothers Big Sisters informed of important news and upcoming events.
Jenny was born and raised in Northeast Florida and is a graduate of
Flagler College in St. Augustine with a Bachelors Degree in
Communication. She serves on the hospitality committee at her church
and does freelance graphic design work. In her spare time, Jenny enjoys
drawing, reading, and playing flag football. She and her fiancé are
also in the process of becoming a Big Couple through Big Brothers Big
Sisters. Let’s give our speaker a very warm Kiwanis welcome!

LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Our program last week was presented by
Jack Levine, Founder of Advocacy Resources and currently head of
4-Generation Institute. He was introduced by our Kiwanian-of-the-day
Ron Braun. Our speaker is a Kiwanian and a resident of
Tallahassee. He opened his program by stating that he wanted to share
some inspiration and strategies for helping children. Children live in
a context of family and community and that he was here today in
celebration of Kiwanis’s devotion to children. However, he stated that
demographics dictate that we look at all generations and remember that
we must invest in children, but must also not ignore the needs of our
elders.
In 1908, life expectancy was only 48
years. In 1970, this increased to 61 and today, life expectancy is 80.
Two-thirds of all people who have reached seventy years of age are
currently alive today. And this number will continue to grow because
people are living longer. Today there are 51,000 centenarians.
Long-term care is not being articulated in this election year because
none of the candidates have a plan to help the elderly. His
organization, the 4-Generation Institute is only a conversation. Its
objective is to tell the truth, generate a plan for all generations and
promote volunteerism. Currently, we have 1.1 million Floridians who
today are living alone. This is a sad statistic.
Our speaker provided free subscription
cards for our membership to Grand Magazine which is printed here in
Gulfport. Its purpose is to give grandparents ideas on how they can
interact more frequently with the younger members of their extended
family. We all owe Ron a word of thanks for bringing this most
important program to our attention.
VISITORS AND GUESTS
We had a very large number of
guests last week. Art O’Hara came as a guest of Cynthia McGowan. Louie
Adcock was the guest of Bryant Boydstun and Joan and Forrest Eleczer

Pamela and his daughter Paige as his guests. Following are all the
guests of our speaker Jack Levine: Astrid Ellis, Sherry Sacino, Sara
McMillan, Joan Berry, Sonya Duran, Jesse Battle, Brent Gordon, David

Over 450 Kiwanians attended the Convention.
