LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS

John Biesinger, acting as Kiwanian-of-the-Day, introduced Jenny Shaw, the public relations director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus Counties.  Big Brother et al has been in existence for 102 years world-wide and 39 years locally.  They serve boys and girls ages 5 through 13, but a child can stay in the program until age 18 or upon his or her graduation.  Extensive background checks are made on the mentors.  They can be from high school age up to retirees, so long as they have transportation.  There are professional “matchmakers” on staff to match mentor with child.  There is a one year commitment on behalf of the mentor.  They are asked to afford at least four hours a month with the child.  There is an “On-site” program which can be at an elementary school or a rec center or a community based program where the mentor can spend time with the child in the community.  The Big Brother Big Sisters program helps prevent these at risk kids from future trouble with the law.  A study shows 95% of graduates of the program avoid problems that would cause them to enter the juvenile justice system.

KIWANIS FACTS – DID YOU KNOW?

Clubs should involve new members as quickly as possible, and a good way to initiate new Kiwanians into our club’s activities is through committee assignments.  There are benefits to the new member and to the club as well.  Sufficient time should be allowed to determine how the new members’ interests best correlate with the club and committee’s work.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Heavenly Father, in your Word you have given us a vision of that Holy City to which the nations of the world bring their glory.  Behold and visit, we pray, the cities of the earth.  Renew the ties of mutual regard which form our civic life.  Send us honest and able leaders.  Enable us to eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with order, and that men and women from different cultures and with differing talents may find one another with fulfillment of their humanity.  Amen.
