Tuesday, September 19, 2006 No. 50 Vol. 84 Today’s
Speakers: Al Karnavicius & Frank Ranieri A Peek at the St. Pete
Kiwanis Archives
Our program today is a look back at our own Kiwanis Club’s origins
and early years: the 1920’s and 1930’s. The program is being presented
by fellow St. Petersburg Kiwanis Club members, Frank Ranieri and Al
Karnavicius.
Five or six years ago, the late Charles Kaniss, a long-time member of
this club, presented assortment of boxes and containers to Al
Karnavicius at his office. Charlie told Al that he had been keeping
these items for many years and now it was time to pass them on to
someone else….someone with a lot of shelf space! Al reluctantly agreed
to store the items. He knew that the items were St. Petersburg Kiwanis
Club-related, and that they had some historical significance, but he did
not open the boxes or look at them until a few weeks ago when he invited
Frank Ranieri to join him in the examination of the contents in
preparation for today’s program.
The results, some of which you will see and hear today, are a
fascinating look back at the city of St. Petersburg, the state of
Florida and the rest of the world as it existed in the 1920’s and
1930’s. You will “meet” the founders of our club and experience some of
the issues and situations that they faced in those early years. Frank
and Al have discovered newspaper articles, photos, board meeting minutes
and other interesting artifacts which will be presented today and,
perhaps, at future programs examining other time periods.
TODAY’S QUIZ
1. Where were the first Olympic Games held? 2. What character did
Harry Anderson play on the television show “Night Court”? 3. Who
hosted the daytime television game show “Wheel of Fortune” on its 1975
premiere? 4. In the Bible, who was the first king to reign at
Jerusalem? 5. What year was the bald eagle added to the endangered
species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?
LAST WEEK AT KIWANIS
Kiwanian-of-the-day Charles
Stuart introduced our program with two speakers last week. Jack
Tunstill, Chairman of the Albert Whitted Advisory Committee opened
the program by talking about all of the activities that would be
displayed at the Airfest. Jack stressed that this year’s show would
have many more activities designed to keep Albert Whitted in the public
eye. All branches of the military will be represented. The Marine
Amphibious Unit stationed in Tampa will “invade” the airport during the
program. The Coast Guard will have a water rescue, a parachute jump
from one of their helicopters and a low pass by one of their C130
aircraft. In addition the USCG Base at the airport is having an open
house during the Airfest. A USAF Band and civilian air show performers
will also be featured. The Airfest is scheduled to be held on October
21st and 22nd. The Saturday show will run from
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the Sunday show runs from 10:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00 per person if bought in advance and
$15.00 at the gate. Children under 6 years of age are admitted free.
Dave Thompson then proceeded to
discuss the future of Albert Whitted Airport. As a result of the vote
by the city to keep the airport, Albert Whitted is on the receiving end
of a large number of important grants. A new Terminal with a
restaurant, new paving on the aprons and taxiways, and a new control
tower are all either under construction or approved for future
construction. In addition, a twenty acre park, accessible to the
public, is planned for an old asphalt parking lot. Many thanks to
Charles for bringing such an interesting and informative program to our
attention.
VISITORS AND GUESTS
Chris Jordan brought Ashley Surdyk to our meeting as his guest. Charles
Stuart brought his wife Judy as his guest. Welcome and please visit
with us often.
SIGN UP TODAY FOR HAPPY WORKERS
LITERACY FAIR
One hundred and fifty books
were collected for the Happy Workers Children’s Center. This is a
tremendous response to our book drive and the books collected may just
very well change the lives for some of these children. Many have never
owned a brand new book and this will allow them to take several books
home. Congratulations fellow Kiwanians for making a difference.
The Literacy Fair is scheduled for
Saturday, September 23rd with two shifts: 9-12 and 12-3.
The Fair will be open to the public from 10-1, but volunteers are needed
before, during and after to set up and break down. The Fair will
include crafts, storytelling, pony rides, a moonwalk, hot dogs, snow
cones and free books. This is a very fun event and we had close to 200
attendees last year. Please reserve September 23rd for
helping out at the Literacy Fair. A sign-up sheet is being passed
around so you can indicate your desire to be a part of this great
program and work either a morning or afternoon shift. Watch for it and
be sure your name is included. You will be glad you did. This is just
another way that Kiwanis helps children!
INSTALLATION BANQUET ANNOUNCED
President Cathy announced that
the Installation Banquet will be held on October 3 at the St. Petersburg
Yacht Club. Members will receive an Invitation in the mail. Please
respond as soon as possible so an accurate count can be determined.
Let’s make this the biggest and best Installation Banquet in the history
of our club!
ROSTER UPDATES AND PICTURES DUE SOON
Al Karnavicius is beginning to
update the Club Membership Roster for the 2006-2007 Kiwanis year. He
handed out information sheets for members to complete with changes for
the directory if necessary. He also announced that Don Munafo would be
taking pictures for those who need them starting TODAY! Cost of
the new picture is $5.00. Also, please get your information sheet with
any corrections in the information back to Al ASAP!
KIWANIS FACTS – DID YOU KNOW?
Article VII, Section 1, of the
Standard Form for Club Bylaws states that the board of directors
consists of the officers and elected directors. If the lieutenant
governor happens to be a member of your club, he would also have to be
elected director to be on the club’s board of directors.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, who sits in the throne judging right, we humbly
beseech thee to bless the courts of justice and the magistrates in all
this land and give unto them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
that they may discern the truth and impartially administer the law in
the fear of thee alone. Amen.
