Skip Mahaffey,
radio host on US 103.5 entertains Tampa Bay radio listeners from 6 to 10
weekday mornings. Over the years, Skip has used his popularity and
charisma to raise awareness and money for many causes, including hosting
radiothons for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and

AL
MUTER SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATIONS
One of our most gratifying programs features the presentation of college
scholarships from our Club’s Al Muter Scholarship Fund. Last Tuesday,
friends and family of this year’s recipients, easily identified by their
smiles of pride, filled the tables at our luncheon in support of four
charming high school seniors, 2007 winner, Chelsea Odoms, and runners-up
Ian Markwood, Metodi Natov, Amber Robinson and Katie Shinske. Each has
an exceptional record of academic success, extracurricular activities
and community service and, in the spirit of the award, a strong work
history. Al Muter, a long-time Kiwanian, worked his way through college
and believed it was an important part of becoming a responsible adult.
As he got older, he set up a scholarship fund through our Club to help
young people get an education, but he made it a condition of the award
that the recipient also bring some “work equity” to the building of
their career foundation.
Co-Chairs Biff Baker and JC Russell recognized the members
of the Vocational Guidance committee for their hard work: Stan Shaver,
Cal Foelgner, Rob Kapusta, Dan Stone, Lloyd
Banks, Cathy Swanson, Paul Renker, Trent Shadwick,
Steve Koch and Bryant Boydston. They spend many
hours getting applications out to all the places students are, reviewing
submissions, conducting interviews and choosing five from a large number
of qualified students, 3200 this year. In particular, JC thanked Kapusta
and Boydston for time spent on meetings and interviews. The Co-Chairs
also thanked Dave Neely of
4th Street
Chick-fil-A, who was unable to be present, for his role in helping the
committee find alternative means for reaching working students.
The
Vocational Guidance Committee, on the recommendation of the Board of
Directors, announced increases in the renewal awards given to the three
previous Al Muter recipients from $2,000 per year to the new approved
amount of $2,500 per year to coincide with the dollar amount being
presented to this year’s winner. The four runner-up winners were
presented a one-time award of $1,250.
Guests and Visitors
Our Club welcomed 66
members and 11 visitors Tuesday, all the visitors being our scholarship
recipients and their beaming family members. Welcome, all! We’d
especially like our scholarship recipients to join us for future
luncheons to tell us how and what they’re doing.

No Shirt, Sherlock?
If you haven’t
picked up your Kiwanis shirt, they’re available today for just $25, $30
if we have to lug them around another week!
Silent Auction Items
Still Needed!
The annual Kiwanis
Jim Fischer Scholarship Birthday Bash to raise funds for
scholarships is coming up on June 16th. We’d love to see you
there and we hope you’ll bring a gift – a silent auction item, that is,
to help send more kids to school. Stumped about what to contribute?
Squeamish about asking vendors, retailers and restaurants to donate?
Then buy a couple bottles of wine and we’ll provide the basket! Many
silent auction items are needed so, please, ask restaurants and
retailers you frequent to give a gift certificate or be prepared to
start buying some serious spirits of any kind.
Lorin
Bridge
still has some openings for golfers for the golf tournament May 31st
at the Vinoy. Tee time is 1 p.m. It’s a four-man scramble and costs $60
per golfer. Just go for the fun of it and don’t worry about the razzing
you’ll get from the finemaster in front of everybody!
InterClub
Opportunities Abound
If you are new to
the Club, you may not realize that InterClub visits are fun and an
important part of our membership. By attending another Kiwanis Club
during the week from time to time, you make new friends, experience the
scope of Club interests and activities and are able to share ideas with
other civic-minded business people. Kiwanians are expected to attend at
least one InterClub a year. Whe you do, you’ll receive a sticker for
your Kiwanis name badge. Listen for invitations throughout the year.
Sunday Is…
Mother’s Day! Handy
gift tip from the Membership Committee: Show your mother you love her by
buying her a year’s membership in Kiwanis!
TODAY’S QUIZ:
1. What is the only
State in the country that does not have a rectangular flag?
2. How many Kiwanis
chapters does the State in question one have?
3. What is the
origin of the phrase “Mother McCree?”
4. In what year were
women allowed to join Kiwanis?
LAST WEEK’S QUIZ:
1. Investigations
over the last 100 years have revealed that Stonehenge
was built in several stages from 2800 - 1800 BC.
Rome’s Colosseum was built by the emperor
Vespasian who died a year before it was finished. His son Titus finished
it and opened it to the public in A.D. 80.
2. You are more
likely to be a target of mosquitoes if you eat bananas or other
potassium-rich foods.
3. About 100
people choke to death on ballpoint pens every year. Chew on your
pencil instead. At least you can break down the wood into some
much-needed fiber.
4. All of us know
people who wouldn’t notice and some who’d argue with you that it hadn’t,
but it would take 8 seconds for most people on earth to see that
the sun had stopped shining.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
May the blessing of
the Divine
Be an especially bright benediction
Upon mothers everywhere
On the blessed day
called Mother's Day!
