June
12, 2007 No. 36 Vol. 85
This Week’s Program:
Tim Wilkins, Comedian and Co-Host
of Channel 10's Studio 10
Tim Wilkins is an internationally touring comedian with over a decade of
experience. His comedy career is the manifestation of a dream that has
driven him since he was a boy. Tim’s show is a journey through his life
and the world around us, as seen through his colorful comedy goggles.
His use of voices, dialects, and natural comedic slant bring his stories
to life like very few comedians today. As a father, former Marine and
personal trainer, he pokes fun at the things he loves most, including
his own family, trends, technology and staying in shape.
Because Tim’s act is universally enjoyed, he is a favorite choice for
corporate shows, cruise ships and concert promoters and has toured as
the opening act for some of the legends of pop and country music, such
as: Wynonna Judd, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Righteous Brothers, Aretha
Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Olivia Newton John, Engelbert Humperdinck, Hall
& Oates, Styx, David Cassidy, Leon Redbone, Belinda Carlisle, Ann
Margret, Paul Anka and is currently touring with Julio Iglesias
throughout the United States.
In
2005, Tim released his first CD, Tim Wilkins - Big Time Comedian
and instantly started getting airplay on XM and Sirius Satellite Radio.
In June, he was honored to perform for our troops in Afghanistan with
the Comics on Duty World Tour. Tim brings a special exuberance to
each and every show. He takes pride in eliciting big laughs with comedy
that is thought-provoking, topical and relatable.
During the day, Tim is the co-host of WTSP Channel 10's midday show
Studio 10. Tim also has a part in a feature film that is currently
in production.
Tim moved to Sarasota from Los Angeles in 1994. As a father of two, he
can think of no better place to raise a family than the Bay Area.
Last Week’s Program:
Bob Devin Jones, Co-founder, Studio@620
We were
honored last week to welcome Bob Devin Jones, celebrated
playwright, actor and director and co-founder of St. Petersburg’s own
Studio@620. He is the author of the plays Uncle Bends: A Home-Cooked
Negro Narrative and Black Witness: James Baldwin. His plays
have been performed at regional theaters across the United States and in
Ireland.
Jones grew
up in Southern California and was educated in Los Angeles, San Francisco
and London. He moved to St. Petersburg about ten years ago and has
participated in many capacities in the local cultural scene, directing
and performing at the Palladium, American Stage and at the
three-year-old Studio@620. This fall, he will direct August Wilson’s
Gem of the Ocean for American Stage. He spoke knowledgeably about
the history of the St. Petersburg arts and cultural landscape and the
support the local community has brought to it.
Jones
characterizes Studio@620 not as a theater or gallery, but as a community
center open to a variety of cultural offerings. The Studio features
Spoken Word performances, art exhibitions, concerts, a Writers and
Authors series, a documentary film series and Social Justice discussion
groups where meals and ideas are shared by speakers and attendees.
Whenever possible, the Studio offers a richly-layered experience where
art may be viewed and made against a background of music and the sharing
of food. A history and exhibition of the art of the Florida Highwaymen
was presented last year to great acclaim; most recently, a photo
exhibition and fundraiser for the YWCA called Purses and Passion
featured images of women’s purses photographed by girls served by the
YWCA.
Jones
stressed that the Studio cannot put a limit on the cultural experiences
it offers because of the very nature of creativity and the places it
takes the artist and the viewer. Whatever the outcome, however, the
heart of it is the presence and influence of the community that is drawn
to it. On the home page of Studio@620 appears the equation “Artists +
Audience + Volunteers = Community.” It is that equation, successfully
realized, that has assured the Studio of its unique place in the
artistic renaissance in St. Petersburg. For more information or to be
added to the mailing list, visit

Guests and Visitors
We
needed more bankers in our Club, so Lorin Bridge introduced his
guest, Karen Simpson, from American Momentums Bank and Harvey
Ford introduced us to his guests, son Drew and daughter
Meggie. 61 members and four guests joined us Tuesday.
Special Recognition
Jane Harper
and Pam Miller from Family Resources thanked our Club for our
participation and support of the Great Chefs fundraiser, an event we
look forward to every year. They presented the Club and Kathy Condon,
Ron Scoggins and Tom Begley with a plaque recognizing our
contribution of volunteers. Thanks, ladies. We’re happy to help.
Golf Tournament Finally
Over
Lorin Bridge, who has been a fixture at the podium for about the
last three months, stood before us once again to acknowledge the winners
in the golf tournament that finally came and went. Tying for first place
were Pat Kraujalis, Mitch Cochran and Wayne McKay. Second
place honors went to Ron O’Neal, Dan Stone, Jeb Terry and Rev.
Louis Murphy. Weyman Willingham, Skip Carr, Al Corey and
Bob Byelick were third and Skip Carr won the longest drive.
Birthday Bash Reminders
Drag On As Long As The Golf Tournament’s
Al Karnavicius,
another member who is no stranger to the podium, reminded us that
silent auction donations are due today for the Jim Fischer Birthday
Bash this Saturday at the St. Pete Country Club. Al has tickets for
latecomers. Should be a good time and there are great items to bid on.
Speaking of that, who donated the Passion Parties basket???
In Our Thoughts and
Prayers
Skip Carr
informed us that Bob Byelick’s mother had passed away. Bob and
other family members were in New York attending her funeral. Club
members signed a sympathy card to go to Bob who had let Skip know that
in lieu of flowers, the family would like any donations to be made to
the Jim Fischer Scholarship Fund.
What's Happening?
Welcome, New Member
We’ve had a happy addition to our Club! Skip Carr introduced
our newest member, Carey Blaxberg. He needs signatures, ladies
and gentlemen, so pick up your pens and welcome him with a flourish.
Party Like It’s 1999
Don’t forget: the Jim Fischer Birthday Bash is this Saturday, folks.
June Is Adopt A Shelter
Cat Month
Our local rescues and shelters are full of cats and kittens who need
“forever homes.” If you’d like to add a companion animal to your family,
think rescue first and always neuter and spay your pets.
An Update On Our
Sponsored Child
Our Club received a letter from Plan Ecuador with the latest news on our
sponsored child, Evelyn Tofino. We are told by her sister, Johanna, that
Evelyn is healthy, smart and talks a lot. She will enter the third
grade. Sadly, her mother passed away six months ago, but Evelyn is being
taken care of by Johanna and they thank us for our continued support of
their family.
