Last Week’s Program:
Guide To Good Manners With Ms. Kim Goddard
President Mitch decided to forgo
a year-end recap and save his remarks for the banquet. In his place, he
brought Kim Goddard, “Miss Manners,” to the podium to give us practical
advice on how to give compliments and criticism tactfully.
Ms. Goddard, always an engaging
speaker, is the President of Proper Protocol, Inc. Armed with a passion
for civility and a love for teaching, she founded Proper Protocol,
Twenty-first Century Etiquette, as a solution to the dwindling level of
basic social skills and courtesies A certified and widely recognized
protocol/etiquette consultant, Ms. Goddard is active in national
speaking engagements, conventions and seminars on 21st Century
Etiquette.
She started her talk by
complimenting our two Boys and Girls Club award recipients, Dr. Irving
of Happy Workers and Ms. Alabed of the Girl Scouts (discussed below) for
the fine work they do on behalf of children and youth. Goddard then said
that her remarks were examples of “compliments from the heart.” She then
acknowledged Al Karnavicius and Bob Piplitz for their smooth delivery of
compliments and commended Lt. Governor Eddie Lee, our guest, for his
“terrific compliment to this Club.”
Ms. Goddard explained that when
addressing a problem or offering criticism with another, it is best to
start with a genuine compliment about a real accomplishment, then ask
about the problem, suggest a possible solution and ask if that solution
would work in that situation. In that way, no one is offended or
defensive and one has involved the person in solving the problem. Never
criticize employees in a way that acts as a disincentive and never
criticize anyone in front of others. Always remember not to criticize
the person, just the incident. Ms. Goddard peppered her remarks with
humorous stories of tactless criticisms leveled at her and explained how
she countered them with aplomb.
She also acknowledged that
everything we say is softened with a pat, a hug or some other physical
reassurance. “The power of touch is huge,” she said and related some
stories from her work with juvenile offenders with whom she works. She
also works with all the new police recruits on courtesy and civility. In
response to questions about thank yous, she said that handwritten thank
yous are still the best option, though a phone call and in third place,
an email are still acceptable and far better than not thanking at all.
With her breezy and humorous
style, Ms. Manner proved that any information is best conveyed with the
intent of making other people comfortable and relaxed. Thanks for the
lesson, Ms. Goddard. Our Club needs all the help it can get!
Guests And Visitors
56 members turned out for the
program Tuesday joined by Lt. Governor Eddie Lee and Mitch Cochran’s
guest, Tim Driscoll. So glad you joined us!
In Other News…
Bob Byelick presented Happy
Workers Child Care with a check for $1,000 which he presented to its
Executive Director, Dr. Virginia Irving. Grant Wallin introduced Susan
Alabed, Community Development Director, whom he gave a $1,000 check for
the Girl Scouts. Both organizations thanked our Club and gave examples
of how our Club’s dollars would be put to work to better the lives of
children and families.
Jane Baldwin thanked all the
members who donated books or cash for books for children in the care of
Happy Workers, nearly 200 books in all. The Literacy event of which the
book drive was a part was held on Saturday. We look forward to reports
about the literacy event and Lorin and Al’s tailgate party before
Saturday’s game.
Lt. Governor Eddie Lee presented
the year in review regarding Division 13 Club’s and was generous in his
thanks to our Club and others, always crediting the success of his
tenure to the Clubs and not to his efforts. You’re a great team leader,
Eddie, and we respect the work you put in this last year on behalf of
Division 13.

Lora Pavlenko
Markus answered her on behalf of
our Club and received this reply:
Hello Markus
Thanks for your letter
I was glad to hear that we
will have a dialogue.
Our club will locate in Kiev
the capital of Ukraine.
In February I have read the
article about Kiwanis club. And also one woman has told that she visited
Kiwanis in America. She has told about the important purpose of this
club to serve people. All our life we lifted people who had physical
problems and we helped them to understand that they are necessary for
society.
It always was in our hearts.
I and my husband we have group of people with which spend social
projects in Ukraine..
In our team teenagers which
had suffered from violence which used to live on the street, young
people from poor families. Now them already 30 persons.
We have created drama theatre
which makes programs for children's homes, for the centers where there
lives an invalid children. All teenagers are volunteers.
After information which we
have received about Kiwanis club we have invited people who has the same
loving hearts. For all was a pleasure to be a part of the big family of
Kiwanis.
For the Ukrainian people
opening of such club the big miracle. We have not enough clubs which
care in other people. The country now only is under construction, social
programs are not created. People are not protected by the law. For this
reason my heart and hearts of all members of club have the big desire
really to care of those who weak and are not protected.
I and my people we shall be
glad if you awake with our sisterly club. You have more experience in
work.
I shall be grateful for the
answer.
Lora Pavlenko.
It just goes to show that there
are good-hearted people everywhere who are drawn to the mission and
goals of Kiwanis. We have much to be proud of as Kiwanians and our Clubs
are an inspiration to others around the world who seek out organized
ways to help children and families. We wish Ms. Pavlenko and her Club
members all the best. A correspondence with their Ukrainian Club could
teach us a lot.
