Last Week’s Program: Thanksgiving Program With The Reverend Christopher Schuller

Kiwanian-of-the-Day Stan Shaver began his introduction of Reverend Schuller by explaining that his church lost thier former rector who was a Kiwanian in ur Club. After a lengthy search by a marvelous job search committee, they chose Reverend Schuller whom Stan hopes will stay with his congregation a long time.

Schuller told us he was very familiar with Kiwanis, having attended his grandfather's Club at the age of five and having a daughter in Key Club. He told us his only Kiwanian joke and a joke about clergyman who go to hell. Reverend Schuller told us his grandfather was new to this country as a young man, but was the most patriotic man he ever met, one who loved his adopted country and defended its freedoms and frailities. The Reverend and his family feel the same way about St. Petersburg. He described growing up in the midwest, the son of a Lutheran minister and his determination not to be a Lutheran minister when he grew up. He and his wife lived in Key West early in their married lives where they ran a t-shirt shop and he played in rock bands. His calling has taken him and his family to England, Germany, Canada and many states in the U.S., but stated that he has never felt as at home  as he does here in St. Pete. He and his wife love the spaciousness here as opposed to Key West, the picturesque neighborhoods and especially Sawgrass Lake park.  He feels, he said, such a gratefulness for the beauty and peace of it.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, he said he did want to impart some religion. It is one thing to appreciate parks, the open waterfront, the neighborhoods and the architecture, he said, but walking along the waterfront with his wife, he saw the light of love shine through it all and that pure moment with God is more important. Those moments with God that he and his wife experience strengthens their relationship. He asked if we had ever experienced those pure moments with God and encouraged us to take time this holiday to be still and experience those pure moments. Don't just be thankful to God, he said, be thankful for God. To experience a moment with God brings a deeper appreciation for our home, our loved ones and our lives. He wished that joy for all of us.

Guests And Visitors

Our Thanksgiving Program was attended by 41 members and three guests. Ron Scoggins hosted Bobbie Gilgosch from Save A Child. Also joining us were Pastors Mark Schenkler and Dave Swenson from Lutheran Church of the Cross. Thanks for joining us and come back again soon!

What’s Happening?

More News From The Ukraine

As you may remember from past editions of the Kiwanian, President Markus has been receiving correspondence from the president of the first-ever Kiwanis Club in the Ukraine, Lora Pavlenko. Chartered in October, the Club is already making a big difference in the lives of children in the Ukraine. Below is an excerpt from the letter Markus recently received. It’s a small world after all.

Hello Markus Mittermayr

This first month for our club became the beginning of new work in Ukraine with children. As the president of club I had many meetings with people who make projects for children. They with interest listened about opening of Kiwanis Club in Ukraine…Last week we had member Club from the New York. He lived in our apartment. It was a good opportunity to learn more about what does Kiwanis in different parts of the world…All 5 days which Tom Kropp stayed in Kiev we have devoted of visiting the places with children we work with.

We was purchased the food for the day center for homeless children, visited the boarding school for children which has diagnosis an autism…Also there was a meeting in the center where there will live 30 homeless children which now stays on the street. Now we make reconstruction there. All directors of these centers are members of Kiwanis. Our club has made decision to support their work with children…we can change a life of children of Ukraine.

I shall be glad to see you or members of your club in Ukraine some day.  I  also would tell a little about some projects which we made last month…We have carried out a holiday of harvest for homeless children who live on the street. They had an opportunity to receive special gifts. Many have started to go to school and we have presented them materials for school. We have cooked food together with children for this holiday.

Some times in a week at the day crisis centre we train children and teenagers to sew, prepare for meal. All teenagers are not able to care of themselves. Some of them them lived on the street 5- 10 years.

Our Kiwanis members have helped to make repair for one poor family. We have found the boy on the street and found out that his mum paralysed at home. We have visited her and have decided to help. Now she has the clean house. Her son goes to school. Our girls bring him some meal.

President Lora

Celebration Time – C’mon!

Lorin Bridge announced last week that there are only ten more spots available for the annual Kiwanis Holiday Party Progressive Dinner taking place on Sunday, December 16th at 5:00 p.m. at Harbor Isle. A sign-up sheet is circulating, so don’t miss out on this great Kiwanis holiday tradition.

Save A Child Receives Kiwanis Check

Each year Young Children Priority One and the Boys and Girls Committee pool funds to provide a Christmas gift to a special charity. This year, Ron Scoggins presented a check for $2,000 to Bonnie Gilgosch from Save A Child. Friday, December 14th, volunteers from our Club will put together toys there for the children served by Save A Child; interested members can sign up today to help out.

Also today, members are asked to participate in our Christmas Angel program. Names and ages of children are available so members can choose one or more children to buy gifts for. Last year, members of our Club bought gifts for 100 kids and we want to do the same this year. For those who want to help, but don’t relish the idea of shopping during this busy season, Kathy Condon has generously offered to be your “personal shopper.”

Kiwanian Of The Week

We’re including a new feature to help members new and old get to know each other better. A short biographical “portrait” and a picture of a fellow Kiwanian will appear in each issue as we receive them.

Name:  Jane Baldwin

Company and Title:  SunTrust Bank, Client Advisor, Private Wealth Management

Joined  Kiwanis because? My boss was very involved in another Kiwanis Club and asked me to join the St. Pete Club.  I stayed because I fell in love with the work we do and the kids we help.

Your single favorite Kiwanis experience/event? Dr. Ron’s ‘Project Smile’, and of course, serving as club president.  Oh yeah, holding baby Christopher until he fell asleep at the Sally House.  And, I can’t forget meeting Jack at the Joshua House…sorry, I can’t pick just one.

Tell us about your family, including pets. I have nine brothers and sisters.  I am also blessed with two great kids.  Jen is 21, a senior at USF and expects to graduate with her chemical engineering degree next year.  Matt is 18 and is in his first semester at USF.  And, yes, I am still single…still waiting.

Perfect day away from work?  Diving in the Keys.

Best vacation ever?  Hiking in the Pacific Rim Rainforest in Ucluelet, Canada.

Last book you read or favorite movie?   Favorite recent movie:  Mr. Brooks.  Favorite love story movie:  Fifth Element.  Bruce Willis has to save the world, but it’s only possible when he experiences true love.

Sports or art walks?  Love diving, hiking, and bicycling, fishing and boating.

Beach or mountains?  Both, and I’m so glad I can have both.

One thing most people don’t know about you?  I leave the inner garage light on because I am afraid of the dark…must’ve been a childhood scar from an older brother scaring the heck out of me when we were little.  Don’t tell anybody, and definitely, don’t turn the light out.

Quote to live by?  “It’s easy to stand tall when standing on the shoulders of giants”  Not sure who the author is, but it’s a great way to recognize the hard work of your colleagues for helping you achieve a goal.

If you were on Kiwanis Survivor, who would you vote off the island?  No way am I touching that one…no doubt, I’d be next because I like the mike.
