This Week’s Program: Niel Allen, speaker for POWW (Preserve Our Wallets and Waterfront)

Preserve Our Wallets and Waterfront is a group of concerned St. Petersburg residents from all walks of life (and from all parts of town) who have decided to work together to provide the community with information regarding the proposed development of the Tropicana site and new baseball stadium at the current Al Lang Field. The Rays have been holding meetings with neighborhood and civic groups.  POWW wants St. Petersburg taxpayers to get a broader perspective on the Rays’ plan to build a waterfront stadium. 

POWW’s mission is “to preserve our world-famous downtown waterfront for generations to come, which includes protecting the environment.” POWW states that its members “do not want to provide welfare to big business via a new baseball stadium for the Rays, and major league baseball is definitely a business.” 

Our speaker, Niel Allen, is a realtor and St. Petersburg native who lives on Snell Isle. Welcome, Niel. Our Club, like the general public, is divided in its support of/opposition to the proposed stadium. We look forward to hearing the facts about this complex matter from POWW’s perspective.

Last Week’s Program: Coach Jim Leavitt, USF Bulls

Kiwanian-of-the-Day Charles Stuart began his introduction remembering former Club member and scholarship founder Jim Fischer. Jim Leavitt, he said, has been a great friend of our Club and the Jim Fischer Scholarship Fund citing Jim’s recent role as emcee at the Birthday Bash, despite being pretty sick.  

Coach Leavitt spoke of his career successes at Kansas State and Morningside College and his many job offers including the fateful call from Leroy Selman, who offered him the USF job for which there had been 120 applicants. It was a powerful moment, said Leavitt, followed by Paul Griffin telling Jim when he arrived, “Jim, start football.”

 He has been “blessed to have been surrounded by great people with great talent.” Coach Leavitt wants badly to win a Big East Championship, but finds the team is always one game away. Still, he predicts great things to come with his new players and wants us and them to understand how important it is to get the little things right, because that’s what wins games.  

Asked about the new players, Jim said they are all very talented, but he’s not sure how good they’ll be as a team because they’re so young and have much to learn. Asked about the effects on football of the recent economic downturn, Leavitt said “you don’t worry abut what you don’t have, you work with what you do.” The key to his success? Staying optimistic. He promises to keep his focus on the players and thanks the Lord every day for his blessed life on and off the field. 

Guests and Visitors

Coach Jim Leavitt’s presentation was chosen as our Membership Drive program because of Jim’s popularity as a speaker and because the USF Bulls have many fans. Our members invited quite a number of guests, some of whom signed in. A partial list of guests includes David Vezek hosted by Bill Stover, Gregory Morgan and James Lally hosted by Tom Nelson, Art O’Hara, guest of Cynthia McGowan, Ron O’Neal’s guest, Carrie Renner, and Terry Dowling, Leslie Travathan and Joe Frisbie, guests of Cynthia Mulligan. Blake Atchely brought Bill Atchley, and Shannon Love attended from USF. Guests were encouraged to take membership literature and applications with them. If you invited someone or ones, please talk to them about sending the application in – it was obvious to all that we’re a great Club with great programs – and we’d love to expand our numbers, our impact and our work on behalf of children. What’s Happening? 

Bruce McKelvey Improving

We received news last Tuesday of Bruce McKelvey’s continued recovery in the Los Angeles hospital where he’s been since his heart attack at LAX several weeks ago. His wife says he is doing well and is eager to come home, but must stay awhile yet until doctors are certain that he will remain stable during the long return flight and beyond. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him at his usual spot at a Tuesday lunch. 

    French Foreign Exchange Students Coming To Tampa Bay

 Frank, I didn’t hear this info and am trying to get it. We can always say the following:

President Markus announced that a group of French foreign exchange students are coming to our area and need housing later this month. They’re eager to learn about Tampa Bay and Kiwanis, so if you and your family would enjoy the cultural exchange and can extend your hospitality to one or more students, please speak with Markus to get the dates and particulars.
