Last Week at
Kiwanis: Field Trip to the Museum of Fine Arts on Beach Drive
Met in Bayview Room
on second floor of the new Hazel Hough Wing.
Lunch catered by
Olympia Catering, the same company that operates the new Café at the
Museum. Lunch was salad, sandwiches, Iced Tea and home made pastries.
No songs, but Ron
Scoggins led the pledge to the flag, and Bob Byelick gave the
invocation. Only one official guest: Carl Collin’s wife Rita. Also, had
an interclub from Seminole Breakfast Kiwanis.
New Member Buddy
Sauter gave his three-minute speech and told us how much he’s already
enjoying being part of the club. Moved to Florida 12 years ago from
Austin TX (he’s a Longhorn), worked for Jabil, traveled a lot to China
for them, now has a 9-month old kid, works in commercial real estate.
Harry Eisnaugle was
finemaster. Had a few happy fines in the room, too.
Bill Stover was
Kiwanian of the Day, and it was revealed that he was the chairman of the
capital campaign that resulted in the construction of the new 39,000 sf
wing. It was also revealed that Seymour Gordon is the sitting president
of the Museum’s Board of Directors. Bill introduced Museum director,
John Schloder who welcomed us to the new Hazel Hough Wing of the Museum.
There are still “naming opportunities” for many parts of the museum,
including the room in which we were meeting. The expansion more than
doubled the size of the museum, and as a result the museum is able to
display a much larger percentage of its permanent collection. The new
design features a village or “Piazza” look and feel and features 4500
years of art under one roof. Also new is the excellent Café (open 11-3
whenever the museum is open) and a greatly expanded and improved gift
store.
After the
presentation, john took half the group on a tour of the new wing, and
his assistant director, Roger Zeh took the other half of the group. We
saw the 25,000-volume art library and several large, new galleries which
will allow for major exhibitions in the years to come.
