Today's Speaker:  Brian R. Lawton  Tampa Bay Lightning

Brian R. Lawton was born June 29, 1965, in New Brunswick, New Jersey and raised in Cumberland, Rhode Island. He is the current general manager and executive vice president for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was also a former professional ice hockey player and player agent who played 483 games with 266 points in the NHL between 1983 and 1993. During his career, Lawton played for the North Stars, New York Rangers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, Boston Bruins, and San Jose Sharks.

He was drafted number one overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. A graduate of Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Lawton is noted for being the first US-born hockey player drafted first overall in the NHL draft. He was also the first and, as of 2008 the only US high school hockey player to be drafted first overall.

After retiring in 1993, Lawton went on to become a highly successful player agent representing NHL talent such as Mike Modano and R.J. Unberger.

Lawton played for three teams that relocated. Which teams are they, and where are those teams now? (See answers on Today’s Quiz page.)

Last Week at Kiwanis:

Kiwanian of the Day, Al Karnavicius, introduced Irma Bridgeford, director of the Tampa/Hillsborough International Protocol Office (THIPO). She explained to us that THIPO is a consortium of the following entities: City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, Tampa International Airport, Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, University of South Florida, University of Tampa, and the Port Authority.

The purpose of THIPO is to coordinate official visits from foreign dignitaries and to oversee that proper protocol is followed. As director, her duties include:

·         To find out the objective or reason for the visit

·         Who should meet them from the local area (trade, security, education, press, etc.)

·         Determine the visitor’s itinerary and pass that information along to the press, mayor or others that will facilitate negotiations.

·         Arrange a welcoming ceremony at the airport or port

In the last four years, THIPO has received 98 diplomats from over 40 countries. The goal of THIPO’s work is to promote business between our area and the representative country. Thus, each party develops a respect for one another to help expand scientific, educational, cultural, and economic opportunity in their respective countries.

Locally, 19 countries are represented and the members are collectively referred to as the Tampa Bay Consular Corps. Consular Corps have honorary and career consulars. The honorary consuls are local residents that are appointed and are influential in the community. The career consuls are paid by the country that hires them, and they may are relocated to new assignments every few years.

One of our own, Al Karnavicius represents Lithuania. For instance, if a dignitary from Lithuania visits our area, Al and Irma work together to make the visit enjoyable and fruitful.
