Today’s Program  SPCA  Marissa Segundo  Public Relations Manager

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Tampa Bay has served as every pet owner's safety net for over 65 years. More than 15,000 homeless and abandoned animals come to the shelter every year.

Marissa joined the SPCA in July of 2004 as the Public Relations Coordinator. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a BS in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations, and a BA in Foreign Languages with an emphasis in Spanish. After graduating, Marissa spent the next year in Monterrey, Mexico, where she interned for an international company.

In 2006, she was promoted to Public Relations Manager at the SPCA. As a life-long pet owner and animal lover, Marissa was enthralled at the opportunity to utilize her public relations skills to help find homes for animals.

Marissa has also used her Spanish fluency to help the SPCA reach out to the growing Hispanic community. She has adopted two dogs from the SPCA, Gypsy and Sadie.

Last Week at Kiwanis

Kiwanian of the day, Bob Byelick, introduced Mayor Rick Baker to an attentive audience. Mayor Baker has visited our club several times during his tenure and as usual, delivered a motivational, feel-good speech about St. Petersburg and what make it tick.

Now in his eighth year as mayor, he reiterated his original campaign goals:

  1. Stronger neighborhoods and sense of community

  2. Increased economic development

  3. Improvement in the public schools

  4. Public safety by lowering crime and building better fire/rescue services

After a few years Mayor Baker added a fifth tenet to his agenda:

More community playgrounds. Mayor Baker is striving to have a playground within ½ mile walking distance of every child. He is almost there as 80% of the city is now served. A month ago our club participated in the latest playground constructed at Child’s Park. Lake Maggorie Playground is the largest in Florida.

Other milestones that Mayor Baker is proud of include:

Neighborhood associations numbering over 100

  • The largest bike path system in the United States

  • Several dog parks established

  • A Mentor program for area schools that has improved graduation rates

  • A resurgence in the mid-town sector of south St. Petersburg including stores, schools, a post office, and a 20 million dollar job corps project

  • Encouraging Jabil Circuit to stay and locate their world headquarters in St. Petersburg

  • The first “green city” in the State of Florida

A few eloquent quotes Mayor Baker left to us to ponder:

“Being a mayor is like a relay race … you take the baton and then pass it on.”

“Downtown has been a 25 year overnight success.”

“I have the best job in the State of Florida – and the best job I have ever had.”

“I am at a ribbon cutting ceremony to open a million dollar library and 15 people attend. The next day at a $9,000.00 new dog park, 200 people and their dogs make an appearance.”

Attending

We had 63 members attending, and 7 guests.

  • Lori Matway, guest of Bob Byelick

  • Sharon McCaman, guest of Frank Ranieri

  • Henry Benjamin, guest from Birmingham, Alabama

  • Jake Holehouse, guest of Ron Holehouse

  • Shannon Love, guest from USF SPCA

"New" Member Three Minute Speech

Bret Jahn gave his three-minute speech last week. Bret, Vice President with Bay Cities Bank in St. Petersburg, moved to the area thirty years ago. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he is an insufferable Buckeye fan and has had to put up with the legions of Gator fans the past few years.

He lives in Clearwater with his wife, Jennifer, and two daughters, Brittany, a high school senior with ambitions to go to nursing school, and McKenzie, an avid softball player.

Bret’s interest includes golfing and is ready to duel Lorin in the annual Kiwanis Rainy Day Open.
