Today’s Program News and Views from St. Petersburg Times Columnist Bill
Maxwell
Bill
Maxwell first joined the Times in 1994 as an editorial writer. He
also wrote a twice-weekly column. In 2004, he left to teach journalism
and establish a program at Stillman College in Alabama, but he returned
to the board in August 2006.
A native
of Ft. Lauderdale, Maxwell was reared in a migrant farming family. After
a short time in college and the U.S. Marine Corps, he returned to
school. During his college years, he worked as an urban organizer for
the Southern Christian Leadership conference and wrote for several civil
rights publications. He first began teaching college English in 1973 at
Kennedy-King College in Chicago and continued to teach for 18 years.
Before joining the Times, Maxwell spent six years writing a
weekly column for the Gainesville Sun and the New York Times
syndicate. Before that, Maxwell was an investigative reporter for the
Fort Pierce Tribune in Fort Pierce, where he focused on labor and
migrant farm worker affairs.

38 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through the college of
Arts & Sciences, Business and Education.

provided 114 kids with scholarships over the last four years, 39 of them

Bob

you from the bottom of my heart.

The Fischer-Carr Scholarship Committee
Bob
Byelick has updated the club on the Fischer-Carr Scholarship Committee.
Our last
meeting was on 10/29/08. We reviewed the Birthday Bash. Attendance was
over 120. Net was $28,925. Letters were going out to sponsors, donors,
and attendees. We agreed to meet at the same place, the St. Petersburg
Country Club, and date – the Saturday before Father’s Day. We discussed
the expansion of sponsorships. We’ll need a sub-committee to work on
this. Subsequently, we learned that St. Petersburg Country Club has a
wedding on June 13th so we have reserved June 6th
as the date of the Bash.
By
unanimous agreement, the committee renamed the scholarship as The Jim
Fischer-Skip Carr Scholarship Fund as proposed by Suzi and Kris Fischer.
The Kiwanis Board has subsequently approved this.
The golf
event by Englander and Fischer resulted in $30,430! Sponsoring two
students through Pinellas Education Foundation and 37 Mayor’s Mentors
and More Doorways Program gives us 113 total. We will await word from
Englander and Fischer on the 2009 Golf Event.
2009 is
here and we need to move forward with a bigger year. Linda and Kevin
Carr have been added to our Committee. We look forward to their input
and ideas on improving our ability to make a difference in memory of Jim
and Skip.
Our next
meeting will be Wednesday, January 28th at 5:15 p.m. at
Englander and Fischer – 721 1st Avenue North. Golf, Bash,
Sponsors, Mentoring, and other ideas will be on the agenda. Please mark
your calendars.
Last Week at Kiwanis
Despite
being bit by a no-show from the SPCA, the meeting did not go to the
dogs. Fine Master John Biesigner, (Where have you been?) made up for his
hiatus and shook us down for a whopping $320 in fines. Thank you, John,
I think. Come back and see us sometime, albeit not in a Brinks truck.
UF / NCAA Championship Football Donation
Louis Murphy stepped in with an ad hoc program to update us about his
son; wide receiver for the Gators, Louis Jr. Louis donated a football
for auction signed by several Gator players in Miami at the BCS
Championship Game. Paul Renker “won” the football with a winning bid of
$700. Thanks, Louis & Paul, for your generosity. Louis also thanked the
club for including the Murphy family in their prayers. LJ is recovering
from a small tear in his meniscus. Louis is looking forward to the NFL
draft to see which team will be so lucky to draft LJ and to usher in
Louis’s retirement.
