Last Week at Kiwanis

Kiwanian of the Day, Biff Baker, introduced Bill Maxwell, columnist of the St. Petersburg Times and a former college professor.

Maxwell, feisty and opinionated, delivered a fast-paced program sprinkled with amusing anecdotes and sharp, stick-in-your-eye comments regarding race relations in the United States. As Maxwell was speaking, President Barack Obama delivered his inauguration speech. It is Maxwell’s hope that Obama is able to close the gap between blacks and whites so the country can leave the last vestiges of Jim Crow thinking behind.

But Obama cannot do this alone as Maxwell maintains, it is up to us to take charge and not be afraid when we see racism. He urged us not to be reactive but proactive and to put racist people and racist comments in their proper place.

Maxwell, born into a share cropping family, saw racism early in his life, and his life’s ambition was to speak out against racism. He refused to be controlled by others just because of race.

Recognizing that our club is all about children’s welfare, he urged us to educate children about the perils of racism and the importance of a good cultural mix.

In response to a question, he said despite advances made in Maxwell’s lifetime, there are still places he would be afraid to be seen. Answering another query, he explained that to him it doesn’t matter whether the word “Black” or “African-American” is used in describing a particular race. Words are not the problem; it is the context and the meaning behind the words that is important. He mentioned a column he wrote against Jesse Jackson’s desire to replace “Black” with “African-American”.

Bill, on a historic day, we appreciate your perspective you brought to this club and your ideas to help all us further better race relations.
