District Council Meeting
Bob
Piplitz, Markus Mittermayr and I attended the District Council Meeting
(DCM) at the Seminole Club Thursday night. The Lt. Governor led the
meeting. She read a list of dates to remember: April 4th is Kiwanis One
Day where ALL K Clubs world-wide have a project on that day; May 19th
the next DCM date is at our club; June 14th is Kiwanis Day at the Rays
game with the Washington Nationals; June 25-28 is the International
Convention in Nashville.
Kiwanian
Stuart Harris, from the Countryside Club, was the speaker and talked
about Challenge Day, which is an idea for helping youth "find
themselves" and become productive citizens. We will be hearing more
about it soon. To get a head start, members can go to

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian
of the Day, Bob Byelick, introduced Matt Silverman, President of the
Tampa Bay Rays, 2008 American League Champions. With over 90 members and
guests in attendance, Silverman did not disappoint as he
enthusiastically prepared us for the 2009 season and answered many
questions. Silverman made special mention that this was his fourth visit
with us and considered it an omen of good luck and success.
Reflecting on the 2008 season, he pointed out the Rays started as a
100-1 long shot to make the World Series. But with Joe Maddon’s new age
math of 9=8 (9 guys playing hard equals 8 teams in the playoffs), the
Rays prevailed as the best feel good story in baseball in years. In
fact, the Rays record improved to 97 regular season wins, 31 more than
the 2007 season. Maddon’s personal goal for the team was met, not so
much in the number of wins, but the fact that the team achieved
“accountability and built relationships”.
This
year, for Maddon, it is all about “humility and gratitude”. Silverman
has already seen a different kind of Ray’s player at their new spring
home in Port Charlotte. In short, while they have the same spirit as
last year, that spirit has carried over to a feeling that the players
now know it can be done on the field. So Silverman delivered to us
Maddon’s newest math lesson: 9>8, that is 2009 will be greater than
2008.
Following
his speech, Silverman was peppered with a variety of questions. In short
fashion, here is some of what he answered:
·
David
Price will be a starter but will be limited to about 160 pitches.
·
Season
tickets sales are up slightly, but nowhere near what a World Series team
should have.
·
B. J.
Upton’s shoulder is fine and he should be playing sometime in April. A
long term contract for him is open to speculation.
·
The
closer will be Troy Percival, unless he is physically unable to perform.
If Percival cannot answer the call, it will be bullpen by committee.
·
Dioner
Navarro wants a long term contract after losing his arbitration, but is
still happy to be a Ray. By the way, the Rays are 4-0 in arbitration
cases. Former member John Higgins, now working for the Rays, was
credited by Silverman for this success.
·
The
training facility at Port Charlotte is state of the art and allows for
minor and major baseball players to intermingle.
·
Maddon
and the Rays want to extend Maddon’s contract.
·
There is
talk among the owners and networks to start playoff games earlier to
appeal to school kids as well as sleep deprived adults.
·
Interest
in the Orlando area has spiked, but no games are scheduled there this
year.
·
The
playoff exposure allowed an international and national audience to learn
more about St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay area.

Check Presentation
Al Karnavicius gave a check from the Boys and Girls Committee-Youth
Investment Services of $1,500 to Katherine Lenel of CASA (Community

CASA with their parent for supplies and will help 25-50 children this
year. With Matt Silverman listening, Katherine made special mention to
the Rays organization for all their help to CASA, too.
