Today’s Program Super Bowl, China Olympics, etc. Gary Shelton of the
St. Pete Times
Gary Shelton
joined the Times in 1990 as the National Football League writer and
became a sports columnist two years later. He writes a column several
times a week, his subjects ranging from the familiar to the forgotten,
from the Super Bowl to a vacant lot.
Gary began his
journalism career writing about sports in Alabama and Georgia for the
Columbus Enquirer in 1978. In 1984, he moved to the Miami Herald, where
for six years he covered the Dolphins, the NFL and the University of
Florida. His most admired athletes: Arthur Ashe, because of his grace.
Michael Jordan, because of his competitiveness. Cal Ripken, because of
his work ethic and Steffi Graf, because of her drive. Least admired
athletes: the growing list of drug-using, spouse-abusing, money-driven,
fan-unfriendly pedestal squatters who think they are on a scholarship
from life itself. Some memorable moments as a sports writer: watching
Bear Bryant walk off the field after winning a national championship.
Watching Don Shula walk off for the last time. Watching the Bucs and the
Lightning rise from the ooze to championship seasons. Watching John
Cullen look at his daughter on a Father's Day he wondered if cancer
would allow him to enjoy. To Shelton, this is sport. Not necessarily the
games, but the emotions and memories they build. He would rather share
those with readers than the nuances of the infield fly rule.
What’s Happening
Blues Fest
The Blues Fest is coming up on March 20, 21, and 22, and we are still in
need of volunteers. We are the largest source of volunteers for this
event. Let’s help out and get to hear great music at the same time.
Salvation Army Lunch
J.C. Russell said our club was recognized for raising over $1,000.00 for
the Christmas Fund. The goal for this Christmas season is to raise more
than the number one organization, the Rotary Club.
Donation to Girl Scouts
Candice Nyarkoh presented Susan Al-Abed of Girl Scouts of West Central
Florida (GSWCF) a check for $1,000.00 from the Young Children: Priority
One Committee. The GSWCF includes eight counties with over 30,000 Girl
Scouts. Yet another example of our club helping the youth of our
community.
More Donations
David Abbey donated $40.00 to buy MOSI tickets, and Bob Byelick chipped
in $30.00 to commemorate 30 years of wedded bliss to Barbara.
Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Tom Nelson, introduced Ralph Bosi, Chief Operations
Officer, of the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). Ralph has a
bachelor’s and a master’s degree in engineering from the University of
South Florida.
Mr. Bosi revealed that MOSI is the largest museum in the southeastern
United States and has over a million visitors a year. Using a PowerPoint

Kids In Charge – This wing is the largest hands-on museum in the country
for children with over 70 exhibits.
·
BioWorks Butterfly Garden - The BioWorks Butterfly Garden is a unique
outdoor butterfly exhibit which focuses upon butterflies native to West
Central Florida. Rearing and displaying native butterfly species, this
garden space shows what kind of Florida-Friendly Garden a homeowner can
create to attract wildlife and turn their own yard into a butterfly
sanctuary.
·
Diasterville – Featuring real-life disasters including fire, tornadoes,
and hurricanes. A visitor can actually get the feel of 74 MPH winds
which is a Class 1 Hurricane.
·
The Amazing You – Here you see a human being as he/she ages from birth
to adolescence.
·
Body Worlds – MOSI’s most talked about, largest, and most visited museum
with over 500,000 visitors so far. Gunther von Hagen’s Body Worlds &
The Story of the Heart presents the form, function, complexity, and
beauty of the human body. Featuring a unique collection of over 200
authentic human specimens including whole-body plastinates, organs, and
translucent body slices. Body Worlds & The Story of the Heart
offers visitors profound insights into the human body, health, and
disease, and the intricate world of the cardiovascular system. This
exhibit has been displayed in 35 countries with over 26 million visitors
