Today’s
Program Easter Holiday Program
Rev.
David E. Swenson
Rev.
David E. Swenson has been serving Lutheran Church of the Cross for just
over six years. He and his wife, Jeanne, have three children, Josh,
Aaron, and Becky, also three grandchildren, Jacob, Chloe, and Britta.
Pastor
Swenson served congregations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Prior to coming
to LCC, he served as Lead Pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in
Madison, Wisconsin. During his sixteen year tenure the congregation
became one of the largest Lutheran congregations in the United States.
He oversaw the development of a second campus three miles from the main
campus. Good Shepherd became known as ‘one congregation, two
locations’.
His
passion in ministry is developing lay leaders, creative worship, and
connecting with the children at LCC’s Christian Day School.
When not
working, he enjoys the ‘Florida lifestyle’ of fishing, boating,
swimming, visiting different beaches, and about every other outdoor
activity.
What’s Happening
Easter Egg Hunt
Be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m. to
help with the Sallie House Easter Egg Hunt. Jane Baldwin is coordinating
this effort. Call her to volunteer. Thanks Jane!
Donation #1
Biff Baker collected money from the members for the Bear Fund at All
Children’s Hospital. Thanks, Biff and all Kiwanis members, for helping
the less fortunate children and their families.
Donation
#2
Charles Stuart and Jerry Little donated $200 to Al Muter. For this, they
received a hot lap on the Grand Prix course.
Don't Miss the Boat
We are having our annual boat trip on (new date) Wednesday, April 22. We
will leave the dock in Tierra Verde at 5:30 and return at 8:30. The
yacht is 100’ and very plush. We will have plenty of food and drink.
This outing includes your spouse or significant other but you can come
alone. The cost is $45.00 per person. We only have room for 50 people so
be sure to see
Weyman
Willingham
and sign up. However, we must have your check payable to the Kiwanis
club in order for you to have a confirmed reservation.
The CKI &
Key Clubs
Shorecrest Preparatory School hosted the 4th Annual NE St. Petersburg
Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society, March 27-28 at
the Haskell Field on the school's campus. This is an overnight
fundraising event where teams walk around the track to raise money, as
well as hold fundraisers before, during, and after Relay by selling
items or conducting fun activities for participants. The key features of
this event, which celebrated its 25th year, are recognition of Survivors
and Caregivers during its Opening Ceremony Friday evening, and a
remembrance of those lost to cancer during its Luminaries Ceremony after
nightfall.
This event brought together nearly 400 Shorecrest students, 55 Berkeley
Prep, and 85 Canterbury School of Florida students, and has raised
nearly $59,000 to date. Including parents and other adults from the NE
St. Petersburg community, nearly 900 participated in this year’s Relay
for Life.
Shorecrest's Key Club joined forces with several members of Circle K
from USF/St.Pete to provide a pancake breakfast for Relay participants,
who welcomed the hot breakfast after camping out on the football field
and walking overnight. This was made possible through a generous
contribution from the Kiwanis Club of St. Petersburg, along with a
donation of supplies from Flik, Shorecrest's food service provider.
Birthday Bash
Bob Byelick
reminded us the Fischer/Carr Memorial birthday bash is on June 6.
Remember, this is our biggest fundraiser. The Fischer/Carr committee
will meet April 9th at 5:15 p.m. at Englander/Fischer
offices.
Nominating Committee
Al Karnavicius,
chairman of the nominating committee for officers and directors,
presented this year’s eligible members for election.

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, David Abbey (also finemaster of mindless racing
minutiae), presented Tim Ramsbuger, director of the Grand Prix of St.
Petersburg. This was Tim’s fourth year as guest speaker and as usual he
was entertaining and informative. This year’s race, for the first time,
is the initial race of the Indy Car Series, whose signature race is the
Indy 500.
Tim noted this year that there are multiple concerts on Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday as well as an air show. A can’t miss is the 125
foot Ferris wheel right next to the Patrone Club and a Beer Garden. Look
out below! Another feature is the opening of the St. Petersburg Yacht
Club for racing fans.
Next, Brant James of the St. Petersburg Times spoke about the driver’s
zeal for the course and how much they love St. Petersburg, and former
winner Dan Wheldon lives in St. Petersburg. James also mentioned that
ethanol from Brazil will power the racer’s cars. When asked why fuel
from Brazil instead of the United States, he replied it was a
marketing/sponsor deal.
After Brant, Tony Fabrizio of the Tampa Tribune explained that the fan
would definitely notice a difference in engine sound as it is better to
the ear with less noise, and a better tone. Also, he said, watch for the
red Firestone tires for the Indy cars. Those will be used in strategic
situations to gain more speed, but the downside is that the red tires
wear out faster.
Finally, Mayor Rick Baker was on hand to lend support to the race and
give us perspective on how important the race is to St. Petersburg.
Worldwide coverage of the race will be on the Versus Network – a real
coup for St. Petersburg and the surrounding area. So, race fans a better
venue cannot be had, and it is right in our backyard.
