What’s
Happening
Date
Change
By
unanimous vote, the club has moved our meeting date to Monday, June 8th,
to accommodate General Petraeus’ changed schedule. Thanks, Dick Koch,
for your continued efforts in securing this notable program.
Fischer/Carr Auction
John Biesinger reminded us we are only one month away for the
Fischer/Carr Auction Night at St. Petersburg Country Club on June 6. He
emphasized the hard work ahead to collect auction items.
Minnow
Trip
The
Kiwanis boating adventure is now behind us and all hands returned to
port. Thanks, Weyman Willingham, for your organizational role.
CKI
Cyndi Mulligan, along with several CKI members volunteered at the St.
Anthony’s Triathlon last week. Thanks, Cyndi, for involving CKI within
the community.
Three
Minute Speech # 1
New
member, Chip Jones, has returned to our club twenty years later. An FSU
grad, and lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, he and his wife, Ginger,
have two daughters. Chip’s father, Don, is a former mayor of St.
Petersburg. When not working as a CPA, Chip and his family enjoy a
second home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Three
Minute Speech #2
New
member Carl Miller is engaged in the commercial glass business in St.
Petersburg, following his father’s footsteps. Carl says this is the
third Kiwanis club that he has joined, and his last.
Welcome, Chip and Carl, as we look forward to your attendance at
meetings and participation in club activities and committees.
Last
Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Scott Boyle, drew the short straw and was selected
to introduce one of our own, Judge Mark Shames, Circuit Court Judge for
Pinellas County. Mark immediately alerted us that judges do not use
gavels. Biff, please take note.
Elected in 1996 to the first of what is now his third term as judge,
Mark feels that the election process is the fairest way to select
judges. If he so desires, Mark, if continuously elected, can remain as a
judge until age seventy.
Mark enjoys the challenges of serving as a judge. His one lament is that
his resources are less as his staff has been reduced while his caseload
increases. And, he said there have been no pay increases for him and his
staff for the last four years. Mark currently is in charge of a whopping
612 cases. And now you know the rest of the story on why our judicial
system works so slowly.
The
Circuit Court rotates the judges to each of the following departments:
Juvenile, Family, Criminal, Probate, and Civil. While a judge on
Criminal Court Mark was assigned a death penalty case. Interestingly,
Mark is responsible for the death penalty case as long as he remains a
judge. Periodically Mark is required to take classes to keep up-to-date
on the death penalty law. Mark pointed out the Florida Supreme Court
takes more time on the death penalty than any other issue.
As
a judge, Mark realizes that politics play a big role in the making and
enforcing of laws. Understanding this, Mark still would like to see
reforms in drug laws to realize fewer criminal cases and treat drug use
as a health issue.
Mark thanks for giving us an intimate peek into your professional life,
and we appreciate what you do to help the community needs.
Editor’s Note/Comment: Mark noticed that the bulletin mentioned his law
career spanned thirty years. Actually, he served as an attorney for
twenty years and then became a judge. I regret the error.
Donation
George Gower presented Patricia Freed of the Mt. Zion Human Services a
check for $1,500.00. The check goes to a program to help tutor grade
school students that fall behind their peers in the classroom. In just a
short time, Patricia has watched this program grow from twenty-five
students to a current eighty-five students. Yet another worthwhile cause
sponsored by the Youth Investment Services.

Letters from Doorways Scholarship Recipients
Bob
Byelick read letters from students who have received scholarship aid
from our club and are attending the following schools: St. Petersburg
High School, Southside Fundamental, Gibbs High School, Meadowlawn Middle
School, Azalea Middle School, and John Hopkins Middle School. Hearing
these letters read underscore our commitment to excellence in children’s
education.
Special Guest
Pastor Louis Murphy proudly announced that his son, Louis, Jr., is now a
member of the Oakland Raiders. Louis, Jr., overcoming injuries and the
loss of his mother, realized his dream of two national championships at
the University of Florida and a state championship in basketball at
Lakewood High School.
At
the podium, Louis, Jr. described the whirlwind experience from the BCS
Title game through draft day. But while Louis is a wide receiver by
trade, for him it is more important to give back to the community, in
St. Petersburg as well as Oakland. In closing, Louis thanked us for all
of our prayers and support and stayed a long time after the meeting
greeting Kiwanians. Louis, good luck to you, and we look forward to your
visits to the end zone – and back to St. Petersburg to see us again.
