Today’s Program Al Muter Scholarship Presentation Dr. Leroy A.
McCloud
Dr. Leroy
A. McCloud has been practicing dentistry in St. Petersburg for
thirty-four years. He was born and raised in Englewood, New Jersey,
where he attended Dwight Morrow High School, from which he graduated in
1963.
He chose
dentistry as a profession in the eighth grade and had selected the
college and dental school that he wanted to attend by the tenth grade.
He
attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating in 1967 with
a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He then attended Howard
University College of Dentistry in Washington, D. C., graduating in 1971
with a D.D.S. Degree. While at Howard he was active in student
government, received awards in Radiology and Crown and Bridge, and was
inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.
After
graduating from Howard he entered the United States Air Force as a
captain and severed two years at MacDill Air Force Base in the dental
corp.
He now
practices general dentistry and has received advanced training in the
use of various lasers as applied to dentistry. He has been a member of
the Pinellas County, Florida West Coast, and the American Dental
Association for thirty six years and is a former member of the Academy
of Laser Dentistry.
He is
married to the former Joy Petit, and they have six children that all
have at least one college degree.
Dr.
McCloud, we appreciate your time to give us all a message worth hearing.
How did
the Al Muter Scholarship evolve?
In 1989,
and in 1990, Al Muter (over fifty years as a Kiwanis member) along with
his wife, Ruth, established two trusts from which the income would fund
college scholarships to worthy high school seniors residing within the
City of St. Petersburg. Currently, each winner receives a $12,000
pledge, and the student receives four annual installments. Additionally,
other monies from the club supplement the scholarship budget.
The
Vocational Guidance Committee, co-chaired by J.C. Russell and Dan Stone,
determines the winners of the scholarships. Always a tough assignment,
the committee spends hours of time to select a winner.
The 2009
winner of the Al Muter Scholarship is Dianeka P. of Gibbs High School.
Congratulations, Dianeka!

Dear Biff,

Scholarship
Winners Return
Today, J.C. Russell reintroduced us to two of our former winners of the
Al Muter Scholarship:
Miss Jalisa F., the 2006 winner and student at Flagler University where
she plays basketball. This summer she interns at the University of
Chicago to jumpstart her goal as a law student at the University of
Chicago.
Miss Chelsea O., the 2007 winner and a student at USF-Tampa where she
maintains a 3.7 average in social
work.
Our 2008 winner, Lana P., who could not be with us, is in summer school
and working in the school library. Lana attends school at Hollins
University in Roanoke, Virginia. Also, not with us was the 2005 winner:
Z’Kera S., on path to graduate from Howard University, Washington, D.C.
J.C., it is splendid to see a great return on our investment. Thanks for
the opportunity to see them again.
What’s Happening
Fischer/Carr Scholarship Dinner…
… to be held on June 6th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Petersburg
Country Club (formerly known as Lakewood Country Club). The committee
urges you to solicit auction items… it is the only way the club makes
money that night. And remember, our special guest auctioneer is Jim
Leavitt, friend of Jim Fischer, and by the way, head football coach of
the football power across the bay, the University of South Florida
Bulls.
Meeting Date Change
A first for our club… our regularly scheduled Tuesday meeting is now on
Monday, June 8th. Then again it is not every day that a
Four-star General drops by, a fellow by the name of General Petraeus.
All Children’s Hospital Telethon
Bret Jahn is in charge of garnering 49 volunteers to help park cars for
the ACH telethon. Watch for the signup sheet and let’s help the children
who need help.

Leadership Education and Planning Conference
Club Leadership Education is all about club leaders for our next Kiwanis
year. It’s about taking time now--with other club leaders--to better
prepare for success during the coming term of service. It’s about
sharing in a Kiwanis moment and participating in leadership concepts.
It’s about having fun, and it’s about growth.
Come prepared with ideas AND an open mind. The responsibility for having
fun in organized community service is a role we all voluntarily share.
CLE focuses on preparing for the role of Club President and Club
Secretary, but all interested Kiwanis leaders are welcome at the
session.

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, President Biff Baker, brought to our club his
wife’s boss, Gary Carnes, director of All Children’s Hospital (ACH). As
director, Gary oversees the largest health care employer in Pinellas
County, as well as a network of satellite facilities that cares for
patients in seventeen counties on the west coast of Florida.
The thrust of Gary’s presentation (featured in a slide show) highlights
the new hospital currently under construction near the present site of
ACH. Opening in December, the hospital will be much larger and have the
latest bells and whistles including but not limited to: their own
helicopter pad, a rooftop playground, improved dining facilities, a gift
shop to dwarf their previous shop, and medical state of the art
equipment to service the 40,000 patients expected annually.
Included in the new hospital is an emergency power plant that cost 42
million dollars, but well worth it… especially after the ACH staff
witnessed what happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. During
tropical storms ACH receives at least forty transfers from other
hospitals.
Additionally, new parking facilities and an outpatient care center
(formerly known as the Medical Office building) are part of the improved
mix of service to the community. What does all of this cost you say? How
about a cool 400 million, but the good news is ACH is under budget and
financed only half of the project. And bankers are eager to lend ACH
money as their bond rating is Double A.
Having said that, Gary says ACH is still dependent on private donations.
One of the largest to date was by Vinny LeCavalier of the Tampa Bay
Lightning, who pledged three million dollars to the cancer wing of the
new hospital. Vinny also donates his suite to ACH ten times a year.
That’s better than a hat trick.
Gary invited us to tour their new facilities. Sounds like a good thing.
