Last Week at Kiwanis

Al Muter Scholarship Awards

J.C. Russell, master of ceremonies for the Al Muter Scholarship Awards, presented this year’s winners, and the members marveled at the students nominated. A selected student must attend school (public or private) south of Ulmerton Road. It is a requirement that the students work as well. He started with the three runners-up.

First, he introduced us to David Holbrook, a graduate of the Center of Advanced Technology, Lakewood High School, planning to attend USF/St. Petersburg with a 4.77 GPA. His calling is mathematics.

Second, a student from the Czech Republic, Lukas Pleva, a graduate of the International Baccalaureate Program, St. Petersburg High School, who did not speak English upon his arrival in the United States. With a 4.83 GPA, Lukas is to study science and economics at the University of Chicago.

And the last of the runners-up (two runners-up could not be with us), Kayla Savage, graduated from the International Baccalaureate Program, St. Petersburg High School with a 3.66 GPA. She informed us she wants to study forensic anthropology at Florida State University.

You can now see why J.C. called the twenty applicants for 2009 the strongest field in the history of the scholarship awards.

How did they select a winner out of this talented bunch? Not easy, according to J.C. But someone stood the tallest, and while she may be short in stature, she is long in talent and hard work. Ladies and gentlemen, the 2009 winner is Dianeka Perrien, a graduate of Gibbs High School with a GPA of 4.32. Oh, in her spare time, she dabbles in tennis and is the number one player on the tennis team, works up to twenty hours a week at Sears as a cashier, serves as President of the Key Club, and volunteers at Hospice. Wow!

Originally from near Montego Bay, Jamaica, she has realized her life’s dream to attend college. And our club has turned that dream into reality as she starts this summer at THE University of Florida. With a $3,000.00 per year scholarship for four years from the club, Dianeka must continue to work, as that was the Al Muter way.

Congratulations, Dianeka, and we look forward to a return visit from you soon.

Dr. Andy McCloud

Kiwanian of the Day, Dan Stone (co-chair of the Al Muter Scholarship Committee along with J.C. Russell) introduced Dr. Andy McCloud, local dentist and father of six children with college degrees. Dr. McCloud reminded us that high school students need to prepare for change and realize that change is constant. Dr. McCloud rhapsodized about the memories of his youth – black and white television with three stations, encyclopedia salesmen, party line phones, and twenty-nine cents a gallon gasoline. Advising the students today, he says, there’s no way change is about to stop. Take a look around us, Twitter, Facebook, Google, flat screen televisions, I-Pods, and picture phones. What’s next? That is what Dr. McCloud says the students need to be ready for and absorb.

Years ago, finishing high school meant the key to good employment. Today, college is a must for any advancement in the job market place.

Short of having the physical talent to land a position with a professional team, new employees are judged by results and not potential, according to Dr. McCloud. Potential, he suggested, is not an indicator of production, only that a particular individual has the ability to achieve results – both in salary and in performance.

With the current economy, once the graduates enter the workforce it is important that they stay focused, are flexible, and versatile. And with an 8.9% unemployment rate, Dr. McCloud suggested that genius is important, but perseverance is the key to employment.

Dr. McCloud indicated to us he is a relatively new golfer and quoted a nugget from way back by a long forgotten, obviously frustrated golfer: “Golf is an honest evaluation of your inferiority.” What to make of that? Turn it around he advises in a life lesson: Make an honest evaluation of your superiority, make  strong points stronger, make weak points stronger, and finally, have fun along the way.

Dr. McCloud, all points well taken by the membership and honored winners and guests. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us.
