Today’s Program: The Arts Center Speaker: Katee Tully
Terry Brett, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Evelyn Craft, past
President/Executive Director, announced the appointment of Katee Tully
as President/Executive Director of the Beth Ann Morean Arts Center,
effective March 1, 2009. The Arts Center is located in downtown St.
Petersburg at 719 Central Avenue.
Katee Tully joined the Arts Center in April 2008 as the Capital Campaign
Director. Prior to her appointment, Katee spent twenty years in higher
education leadership positions in North Carolina and New York. During
her tenure, Katee rose significant funding and established a strong
reputation for building collaborations and partnerships. Katee became
known for her expertise in leadership development and business outreach
during her ten years with East Carolina University; implementing a
nationally recognized leadership program for middle grade and high
school students which was featured on PBS.
Katee then moved to New York City to join Medgar Evers College, a
historically black institution, where she directed the School of
Continuing Education and External Programs. It was in this setting that
Katee developed a wide range of corporate, government, and community
constituencies which furthered her work in economic and workforce
development. She continued this focus when she became Dean of Continuing
Education and Workforce Development at Borough of Manhattan Community
College (City University of New York) shortly before 9/11. In the years
that followed, Katee was intimately involved with the Mayor’s office and
the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan – creating and implementing strategic
partnerships with well over a hundred agencies and businesses – raising
nearly 18 million dollars to foster those partnerships.
Prior to her academic career, Katee trained as a master jeweler and
subsequently opened retail shops in New Orleans, Baton Rouge,
Gatlinburg, and Tallahassee. Jewelry, glass, and recently ceramics (at
the Morean Arts Center) are just some of the art forms she has explored.

New
Member Three Minute Speech
Bill Krautler gave us his three minute speech and was cheered as he
stayed within three minutes.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., he graduated from the University of
Maryland. Other famous Maryland graduates include: Jim Henson, Connie
Chung, and Carl Bernstein.
He
is proud to be a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Cuban missile
crisis and was a key advisor to President Kennedy.
Married for thirty-nine years, Bill has three sons and moved to our
great state in 1991. Now living the high life in St. Petersburg, he
retired in 2007 from internet advertising sales.
He
lives his life through a quote of John Wooden’s: “Things turn out best
for the people who want them to turn out best.”
Bill, congratulations on your Kiwanis membership.
Last
Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Markus Mittermayer, introduced Judith Nicholson,
current Lt. Governor of Division 13. Judith called to order the May 26,
2009, Division Council Meeting. Also present included members of the
following clubs: Gulf Beaches, Pinellas Park, Mid-Town, and Sunshine
City.
The
minutes of the February 19, 2009, meeting were approved and accepted by
unanimous vote. Markus was also formally approved to be the Division 13
Lt. Governor for the 2010-2011 term. Mr. Bill Knowles of Mid-Town asked
for and received by unanimous vote authorization to tender $1,000.00 to
Eddie Lee’s campaign for state treasurer. This money is allocated from
the Division 13 treasury.
Eddie Lee then spoke to us about the trials and tribulation of his life.
Eddie, proud of the fact that he has nearly 5,000 days as a sober man,
has a five point platform that he presented to us to make Kiwanis an
even more viable organization for years to come. He is trying to get his
message across to one club at a time, visiting over 220 Kiwanis Clubs in
the last two years, from Key Largo to the Alabama Line. To improve
Kiwanis, he delivered us his message in a five point plan:
1.
Select outside sponsors to increase
our non-dues base revenue.
2.
Establish long range planning and
select goals that are obtainable.
3.
Make Kiwanis an attraction for new
members and solicit professional direction to make this happen.
4.
Embrace change so we adapt to the
mindset of current and new members. For the last quarter century Kiwanis
Clubs of Florida have lost over 6,400 members.
5.
Find the best leaders and let them
lead. Help those leaders try to be great instead of trying to be big,
says Eddie.
Eddie, we look forward to helping your campaign and good luck in the
state election this August in Orlando.

Prayer of the Day
Loving God, help me
identify in my life all that should rightly die — tired habits,
fruitless longings, old grudges. As you raised Jesus from the grave,
resurrect in me faith, hope, and love that I may live in praise of you.
Amen.
