Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of
the Day, Mark Shames, introduced Goliath Davis, Deputy Mayor of St.
Petersburg. His chief responsibility is to coordinate the economic
development of Midtown St. Petersburg, an area within the boundaries of
Second Avenue North, Thirtieth Avenue South, Thirty-fourth Street, and
to Fourth Street.
After taking
on his current position, Goliath’s staff polled the community to find
their needs and found the residents were seeking a local bank, a
library, a grocery store, and a post office. Thus far, only a bank has
eluded the community’s wish list.
The
businesses that do exist in Midtown are assisted by Goliath with small
business loans and business training
Currently,
the Job Corps facility is the latest jewel for Midtown, located on a 17
acre site at the corner of 22nd St and 5th Ave
South. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2009, it shall serve as a
training facility for young adult’s ages 16-24 years old that do not fit
the mold of mainstream education, but wish to learn a skill or trade
including construction, car repair, and medical technicians and nurses.
The facility is a residential campus and includes a cafeteria. Three
hundred students are scheduled for enrollment for two sessions per year.
Incidentally, Florida has more Job Corps facilities than any other
state.
Asked about
today’s outlook in Midtown, Goliath said that the area is “project rich
and cash poor”, a familiar refrain throughout the United States.
Other
information Goliath shared with us included plans for a new restaurant
located at Albert Whitted Airport, his opinion regarding Police Chief
Harmon and that the police force has sufficient staffing for our City
needs.
Finally,
Goliath is looking forward to the mayor’s election this fall that will
determine his new boss. Thanks, Goliath, for speaking to us and it is
good to know that Midtown has the leadership it needs.
