Today’s Program
Bright House Sports Reporter Roxanne Wilder
Roxanne Wilder began freelancing at Bright House Sports Network and Bay
News 9 in the fall of 2003.
Roxanne took an unconventional path into television. She was a senior
auditor for Arthur Andersen LLP for three-and-a-half years. One of her
main clients was a broadcasting company, so she traveled the country
visiting and auditing television stations. In 2002, she decided to
change careers and pursue her long-time dream of being a sports
reporter. She began an internship at Fox 13 in Tampa. Then she worked
behind the scenes at WWSB Channel 40 in Sarasota. She got her first
opportunity to be on air with Catch 47 doing the Pewter Report with Todd
Kalas and Leo Haggerty.
Roxanne developed her passion for sports while growing up in the Bay
area attending Tampa Bay Buccaneer games with her family. She graduated
from the University of South Florida, but has ties to other Florida
colleges. She also attended University of Florida, and her sister,
Angela Roberson, trained FSU's mascot horse, Renegade.
Roxanne's favorite television show was always Real Sports with Bryant
Gumbel on HBO, so she was extremely excited when she was made part of
Bay Sports, as the show is modeled after Real Sports but with a local
viewpoint. One of Roxanne's favorite parts of her job is meeting and
interviewing people with great stories to tell. Some of her favorite
interviews have been with Doug Williams, Tommy John, and the high school
football players at Robinson High. The person that she has interviewed
that she admires the most is Dottie Lessard-Oconnor, who has overcome
cystic fibrosis and lung and kidney transplants and still competes in
her sport.
Roxanne reports for The Lineup. She is thrilled to be a part of Bright
House Sports Network and enjoys the dynamic people she works with.

Last Week at Kiwanis
This
week’s Kiwanian of the Day, Bob Byelick, introduced Bobby “The Chief”
Taylor, the television analyst for the Tampa Bay Lightning. As usual,
“The Chief” delivered a colorful presentation peppered with poignant
remarks about Commissioner Gary Bettman and the current ownership, as
well as an in-depth analysis of the roster.
According to the “The Chief”, the ownership split will be resolved when
one or the other owners buys the other one out. If this scenario does
not work, there is a good chance the previous ownership group in Detroit
will regain the team. “The Chief” revealed to us that Commissioner
Bettman has not handled the ownership squabble well.
Other
frustrations “The Chief” vocalized regarding Bettman are the way the
salary cap was negotiated. To lose an entire season and to settle for
the current salary structure is not good for the league in general, and
specifically for small and mid-sized markets like Tampa Bay. He
mentioned several franchises are in peril to lose their teams including
Phoenix, Nashville, Atlanta, and Florida.
Reflecting on last year’s team was painful to “The Chief” as he lamented
about the revolving door of players – twenty-two defensemen and fifty
total players – an unprecedented situation. With the transition of all
of those players, he felt that the coach, Rick Tocchet, did a stellar
job, especially having to replace Barry Melrose only a month into the
season.
The
hiring of Coach Melrose proved to be a bad experiment as Melrose had
lost touch with the thought process of the modern player. Barry had no
structure as his method was to tell his players to work harder.
Looking forward to this season, “The Chief” sees improved defensive play
as General Manager Brian Lawton traded for tougher, more skilled
players. Offensively, Steve Stamkos will improve as he enters his second
year. Positioned in the line of Marty St. Louis is important to his
development. Newly acquired Alex Tangeray can only help the line of the
Lightning’s marquee player, Vinny Lecavalier.
“Chief”, thanks for the insider’s view of the Tampa Bay Lightning and
here’s to a great season.
