What’s Happening
Key Club Report
Key Club members Frank Ji and Kaylyn Plum, of St. Petersburg High School,
reported their successful Key Club International Convention in Dallas
from July 1 – July 6. At workshops they learned of positions,
priorities, and protocol. Most intriguing to Frank and Kaylyn was the
Service Fair, a part of the convention displaying service projects
throughout the world. For Florida, this year’s Key Club Project is
devoted to those with disabilities. Represented by sixty-three Key Club
members, these students proudly spread the message of Kiwanis through
their school and with outside activities.

New Member Three
Minute Speech
Marvin Gay, a
retired CPA, enlightened us with a colorful commentary about his life.
Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, he received a scholarship
through the Navy to attend the University of Mississippi. Upon
graduation he saw the world at the behest of the Navy. After five years,
he set off to New Orleans to work as a CPA, working with Arthur
Anderson. There he served in Kiwanis for fifteen years. After his start
with Arthur Anderson, he joined an oil business firm and saw even more
of the world. Retiring to St. Petersburg, his wife, Leslie, works at St.
Petersburg College. Marvin and Leslie recently opened a business on
Central Avenue Painting with a Twist (www.paintingwithatwist.com).
Welcome, Marvin.
Last Week at Kiwanis
This week’s
Kiwanian of the Day, Mitch Cochran, introduced us to Roxanne Wilder, Bay
News 9 and Catch 47 sports reporter. As a young girl her sports-minded
father took her to Bucs games. With this experience, Roxanne developed a
dream to enter the field of sports reporting.
Putting her dream
on hold, she majored in accounting at the University of Florida, and
upon graduation, accepted a job with the firm of Arthur Anderson.
However, sports kept tugging at her and finally she landed an internship
with Fox 13 where she mentored under Chip Carter. Leaving accounting
behind, she landed a job at a Sarasota station reporting on … you
guessed it … sports.
Her big break
arrived as she was invited to do the Pewter Report, a pilot show for
Catch 47. Producers noticed her appeal, and she landed a full time
position with Catch 47. She took acting lessons to improve her on air
presence.
Now fully
established with the Brighthouse Network, Roxanne is seen daily at 11
p.m. Upon questioning, she gave it up that football is her true love and
now that the season is here, baseball is a faint image in her mirror.
One of her first experiences includes watching Ron Jaworski and Merle
Hodge break down film at NFL Films. Nonetheless, Roxanne realizes that
her true talents are not with the X’s and O’s of sports, but rather the
human element and wants to relate to her viewers that way.
Asked about John
Gruden, she now realizes he was lost as a judge of football talent but
still feels he will land another coaching job. That said she greatly
admires his work as a football announcer.
Roxanne, best of
luck in your career, and it is good to see someone follow their dream.
