More Scholarship Letters
Bob Byelick received the following letter from Alina R. is a 10th Grader at St. Petersburg Collegiate.
Dear Mr. Byelick,
First, I’d like to thank you for being able to support me. It’s been a real honor to be in this program. I study currently at St. Petersburg Collegiate program, and I really enjoy being there. My favorite subject is chemistry. The reason I love chemistry is because the course is so interesting. It’s neat to see how things are believed to work. Our teacher is very approachable and fun to be around which makes the course even better.
I do have a few things different ideas for my future. When I was younger I was looking into law, and becoming an attorney. Now that I have grown a little, I’ve been able to see my interests and have found a fondness for film. The reason I enjoy film is because it was along the lines of photography, and I’ve already made a few films. However, I am still torn between both career paths, and I believe that my school and the Doorways program will help me find the better one.
For school beyond high school I had a few universities in mind. First, there was Stetson University of Law, I like this university because it will help me with my career path, and it has a beautiful campus. I was also thinking about the University of Central Florida since my sister went there. Thank you again for your support.
Sincerely,
Alina R.

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Doug Lampe, introduced Louis Miller, Executive Director of the Tampa International Airport (TIA). Louis brought along his administrative assistant, Linda Grief. Linda is now into her eighteenth year with TIA. Louis presented a power point show chock full of details about the airport’s status and grandiose plans for future expansion.
According to Louis, the FAA version of the service area includes Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Hernando counties only, serving approximately 2.7 million people. However, surveys indicate that several other counties are in the TIA mix, most notably Sarasota, Manatee, and Polk. With this in mind, Louis says TIA serves over 4.3 million people. Today, Pinellas travelers represent 31% of TIA’s traffic, Hillsborough 33%.
Due to the slump in the economy, air traffic is down 10% nationally from a year ago, and TIA is no exception at an even worse 13% decline. Interestingly, TIA’s business traffic is 31% of the volume, compared to Orlando’s 10% for business.
When asked about international destinations, Louis replied that until the demand is there, expect what we have now, seven international destinations. However, what is good for the convenience of the TIA flyer are the 66 destinations served non-stop.
Taking a peak into the future, Louis laid out the plans for an additional terminal to the north of the existing terminal. And a fourth runway is in the offing as well as additional taxiways, roads, parking, rental car space, and light rail to both terminals. This ambitious plan is slated to cost one billion dollars with a scheduled completion of approximately 2020.
One drawback for TIA is the relative lack of space as the authority only controls 3,400 acres. By way of comparison, the Salt Lake City airport has 7,500 acres and Orlando a whopping 15,000 acres. Therefore, Louis made it known, it is important that planning is efficient and for aviation purposes only.
Louis, we appreciate the jewel of an airport that you administrate, and we will look forward to the ever expanding, improving airport complex.
