Today’s Program WTSP Channel 10 Weather Reporter Tammie Souza
What better way to end the day than with thousands of friends? That's the way I look at my job. I enjoy being part of your day. I am very passionate about the subject of weather and I will always do my best to give you the most accurate forecast possible. After all, the forecast I give you is the same one I give my family. No pressure there, right?

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I was raised in San Diego, California. Speaking of family... my mom and dad met and fell in love in Florida while attending the University of Miami.

So, where did this interest in weather originate? As a child my grandfather would take me flying in his small plane over the farmlands of northern California. The excitement of soaring through the sky led to questions about why clouds form, what causes storms, and where wind comes from. Ultimately that curiosity has been transformed in to a career as a meteorologist and a love of flying.

That passion seems to run in my family. My sister Patty was the Chief Meteorologist for ABC in Sacramento. She was also a meteorologist in Orlando at one time. (We are the only siblings nationwide that delivered weather on television). My brother Matt is a pilot for Fed-Ex. My dad even worked as a design engineer on the Saturn Boosters for the Apollo Space Program.

A fascination with weather and science has led to a string of special reports, including Storm Chasing, Storm Phobia, Nuclear Power, Global Warming, World War II Planes, Shipwrecks, Stadium Safety and even Haunted Houses. Some of the more notable weather stories I've covered include the Blizzard of 1999, the deadly 2004 Utica Tornado, the anniversary of the 1967 Chicago Tornado Outbreak and the devastating 2003 and 2007 Wildfires in San Diego where my family lost several homes. I also completed a 10-part series of reports about Lake Michigan.

Teaching youth that weather and science can be both interesting and fun is important to me. I've enjoyed sharing my interactive weather presentation at over 600 schools.

Finally, there is my husband Greg who makes me laugh with his inventive weather terms, some of which I will share with you on air. We have one son.

Spare time and hobbies are mainly spent outdoors and include snow skiing, water skiing, scuba diving, gardening, gourmet cooking, flying, hiking, boating, fishing, and never ending home remodeling projects. Environmental issues are also very near and dear to my heart.  We appreciate Tammie’s second visit to our club.

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Biff Baker, introduced Chuck Ross, President of Tampa Bay Blues Fest, held this year at Vinoy Park April 9-11.
For the first time, the Blues Fest is to be featured on National Public Radio (NPR), heard throughout the USA, and worldwide, for that matter. NPR will record the various artists and compile their work, later heard on “The Beale Street Blues Hour”. Also, the XM/Sirius Radio Network will have interviews with musicians on the Bill Wax Radio Show.
As an added bonus to the Blues Fest weekend, After Hours showcases Blues Fest talent at the NOVA nightclub (site of our most recent installation banquet). Doors open at the NOVA at 9:30 p.m. with the music flowing until 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night.
Chuck mentioned that the Blues Fest is attractively priced for the patrons at $30.00 per day with children twelve and under free. The proceeds remaining are shared with PARC. The City of St. Petersburg subsidizes nothing for the Blues Fest. In fact, Blues Fest pays the city for services rendered such as police support, cleanup of the park, and electricity.
After Chuck spoke, Kelli Caputo of PARC was pleased to say this is their sixteenth year involved with the Blues Fest. For her, the association with Blues Fest allows PARC an opportunity to share with the audience what PARC is all about.
Started in 1953, PARC now has a 9.5 acre campus located in northwest St. Petersburg, near Walter Fuller Park. Originally founded to serve mentally handicapped children, PARC now serves adults as well. PARC creates jobs for their clients in their package and assembly plant. Also, adults are able to live in group homes owned by PARC.
Kelli is especially proud of the one to ten teacher/student ratio and has the only program of its kind in Pinellas County for early intervention for the handicapped.
Thank you, Chuck, for the Blues Fest alert, and for Kelli to illustrate PARC’s involvement in the community.

More Scholarship Letters
Bob Byelick received the following letter from Rodneesia, a 10th Grader at Lakewood High School.

Dear Mr. Byelick,
My name is Rodneesia, and I am a sophomore at Lakewood High School. This year l have entered into the CAT or Center for Advanced Technologies program at my school. lt is a little challenging compared to regular classes I must admit, but I'm pulling through; still maintaining A's and B's. This was a good change for me. Right now my favorite subject is Algebra 2. I really enjoy math, especially algebra. Equations are my absolute favorite, and I'm doing well in my class. My teacher is also nice, which affects my favoritism. As for my future career, I am now contemplating on exactly what I want to do. I know I want to work in the medical field, but I don't know exactly what I want to do. So I'm doing my research and talking with my mentor. I'm currently leaning towards some type of doctor. But then again I don't know I might work with medicines and be a pharmacy technician. I would like to thank you again for my Doorways Scholarship. I am grateful and thankful. This scholarship keeps me on the right track. Whenever I come across a problem in school, I just remember that my scholarship is at risk. So thank you!
Sincerely,
Rodneesia
