This Week’s Program: Tour of All Children’s Hospital with Ann Miller Baker
Ann Miller Baker is the Media Relations Manager and Telethon Producer for All Children's Hospital, a position she has held for the past 22 years (that's twice the length of her marriage to Kiwanian Biff Baker).
Through the annual All Children's Hospital Telethon, Ann produces Emmy Award-winning videos that feature young patients and their families telling how their lives have been touched by the hospital's care.
Today, Ann and several of her colleagues will "let the hospital speak for itself." There is no formal program. Lunch will be followed by guided tours of the new All Children's Hospital. The $400-million project includes a new Outpatient Care Center (OCC), Family & Visitors Parking Garage and a Central Energy Plant that can supply power and water to keep the hospital running in case of a disaster for two weeks (with air conditioning). Combined, the ten-story hospital and OCC provide nearly a million square feet of space for the best in specialized care for children. Its many design features assure that All Children's will be able to efficiently care for children for decades to come, in an atmosphere that places families at the center of their child's care team.

The Jim Fischer-Skip Carr Scholarship Fund
The Jim Fischer-Skip Carr Scholarship Fund honors two distinguished members who passed away in 2004 and 2008.
Jim Fischer and Skip Carr were very good friends and active community leaders. They touched lives and were best friends to many people. When Jim Fischer passed away, those of us who were close to him organized the Scholarship Fund in order to perpetuate his legacy of community service. And when Skip Carr died, those same individuals felt it was only appropriate to add his name to the fund to also perpetuate his legacy of service.
Our Club has joined with St. Petersburg Mayors Rick Baker and Bill Foster and the Pinellas Education Foundation’s Doorways Scholarship Program to provide free college tuition to deserving students. Students are selected by Pinellas Education Foundation based upon financial need, good grades, and attendance. If they maintain that status through graduation from high school, they will receive free college tuition. Mentoring is also part of the program.
Since 2004, our Club has provided scholarships to nearly 200 students, many of whom could not have envisioned attending college.
Nice Gesture
In memoriam of the passing of Audrey Lampe’s dog, Georgia Bulldog Click Slocumb sent a check to the University Of Florida School Of Veterinary Medicine. Thanks, Click. Amazing. A Bulldog giving money to the Gators. The only time that happens is after the World’s Largest Cocktail Party.
Did You Guess the Kiwanian?
How many of you guessed the Kiwanian in the Halloween picture of the March 30th bulletin? It was our own Marvin Gay.
Another Thank You Letter from Doorways Scholarship Winner
We received the following letter from Zachary H., an Eighth Grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School.
Dear Mr. Byelick,
I want to thank you for sponsoring me for college. My favorite subject in school is
Language arts because I enjoy writing. Outside of school I play basketball for the Junior Magic league.
I want to go to the University of Florida or Boise State. I also want to go to Osceola High School. I'm not really sure what I want to be when I grow up, my mom says I should be a lawyer because they make a lot of money but being a lawyer doesn’t sound too fun.
It would be so much harder to achieve all of this if you hadn't sponsored me with
this scholarship. So I want to thank you again and tell you that I will try my hardest to keep the scholarship.
Sincerely,
Zachary H.
Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Biff Baker, introduced the newly elected Mayor of St. Petersburg, Bill Foster, a lifelong resident of our fair city.
To begin, Bill praised our commitment to the Doorways Scholarship program (see back page) and is excited to continue Mayor Baker’s idea. With member Harvey Ford present, Bill praised Kathleen Ford as his election opponent.
Bill is proud to introduce two programs that connect his office and city departments with the community: “Mayor’s Night Out” and “Breakfast with the Mayor”. These meetings with community residents will help him get the word out about budget and services. With a 2011 budget of 200 million dollars, the city has to find a way to trim 14 million dollars, thus impacting the current level of services and staff. Once done, Bill’s worries about the “ripple effect” the citizens will experience.
In the question and answer session, Bill showed true concern about the Ray’s future. Bill says the key right now is attendance as his fear is the owners leaving the area because of poor fan support. He totally dismissed Tampa’s efforts in pursuing a stadium.
Addressing the recent newspaper articles on hiring a sports consultant, Bill maintain there is huge upside to securing events and wants to make St. Petersburg a destination known throughout the country as a “Sports City” – like Indianapolis is today. One idea he ran by us is to have a sixteenth Spring Training Team from countries including but not limited to the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia. With the Naimoli Complex and Al Lang Field already built, it is a natural fit. Other possibilities of events include AAU contests and college tournaments and championships including basketball, tennis, swimming, baseball, football, and track and field.
Bill also is committed to the arts in St. Petersburg, specifically mentioning the Dali Museum, as a top tourist stop, and the History Museum. Also, he said keep an eye on the City Council meeting on April 15 as an announcement on Bay Walk is in the works.
Mayor Bill, good to tap into what’s happening in St. Petersburg. We look forward to your next visit.
Great to See You
Yes, Larry Halstead, nice to see you last week with your wife, Jere. May you make many returns. And Jane Baldwin, good to see you, too!
