What’s Happening

A Change at the Top
President Elect Tom Nelson informed the Board of Directors he is unable to serve as President for 2010-2011 Kiwanis year. Tom’s wife, Nancy, is scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant this fall. Tom agreed to serve as President for the 2011-2012 term. Therefore, current Vice President Ron Braun becomes President-Elect immediately and officially takes the Club’s reins as President on October 1, 2010 and presides for one year. By unanimous vote, the Board of Directors accepted the above actions of Tom and Ron. Congratulations, Ron, and best of luck to Tom and Nancy.

According to the Club’s By-laws, the general membership shall affirm the above Board action by a show of hands at the August 10, 2010, meeting.

Biff Baker has graciously offered to step in to chair the program committee until at least April 1, 2010. Thanks, Biff!

And if you don’t understand any of this, check with Charles Stuart!

After a hospital stay in Pennsylvania and in the VA at Bay Pines last week he is to be home soon. He is looking forward to seeing his friends in Kiwanis shortly and is keeping up with the Rays, with a trip to the Trop on the horizon.

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Tom Nelson, introduced Dr. Reva Winkler, Director of the National Quality Forum (NQF), an organization dedicated to achieving the best health care for a fair value.

The NQF coalesces the public and private interests in health care into a partnership. Dr. Winkler says the NQF brings people together who “naturally disagree” including consumers, professionals, purchasers, and providers. The NQF, established in the mid 90’s, is not a political organization and distributes information in a non-partisan independent manner.

On average, Americans spend nearly $8,000.00 yearly on health care. With that expenditure, the NQF works to make sure patients are in a safe environment, the medical methods are effective, their questions are answered thoroughly and correctly, procedures are timely and efficiently, and all races and cultures are treated in an equitable manner.

According to Dr. Winkler, since 1999, 100, 000 yearly die due to medical errors. Explaining some of the reasons behind this appalling statistic, the NQF’s research shows only a 55% adherence to recommended care.

To address the issues of inadequate health care, Dr. Winkler suggests more public reporting to set the bar higher. She mentioned for us to surf the internet and her favorite site is whynotthebest.org. For instance, Medicare is now more accountable as previous and ongoing investigations have revealed fraud and other abuses.

Currently, the NQF is researching why the countries of Japan, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, and others have health care ranked above the United States.

Thank you Dr. Winkler for sharing with us a concern we all share and explaining what your organization’s role is in improved health care.
