Today’s Program: Florida’s Barrier Islands and the Threat of Global Warming
Today’s Speaker: Dr. Al Hine, PhD. USF
I am fundamentally a broadly-trained geological oceanographer who has addressed
Sedimentary geology/stratigraphy problems from the estuarine system out to the base of slope—primarily in carbonate or mixed siliciclastic/carbonate environments. My associates, graduate students, and I have defined the response of coastal and shelf depositional systems to sea-level fluctuations, climate changes, western boundary currents, antecedent topography, and sediment supply. Specifically this includes geologic origin and evolution of submerged paleo-shorelines, reefs (relict and active), shelf sand bodies, open marine marsh systems, barrier islands, and back-barrier environments and how they might have interacted with each other in the past. Our primary research tools are high-resolution seismic reflection profilers, swath and multi-beam high resolution bathymetric systems, side-scan sonars, geoacoustic seafloor-classification systems, and ROV's. Additionally, we have used a variety of submersibles including the Alvin. I also have been heavily involved in scientific ocean drilling and have sailed on the JOIDES Resolution (Co-chief Scientist—Leg 182, and Sedimentologist—Leg 194). Both legs examined carbonate sedimentation along continental margins.
Awards
Winner of 2009 Society for Sedimentary Geology’s (SEPM) Francis P. Shepard Medal for excellence in marine geology

What’s What's Happening

Weekend at Bernie’s
Did you miss that movie? Well, maybe. But don’t miss out on having your name in The “Bernie”, our most helpful directory of the membership. See Al K to update your photo (if over 20 years old) and personal information.

Mission Interclub
Hunter Booth says it is getting close to the end of Bob’s reign (hold your applause) as you have only two more opportunities to fulfill your Interclub obligation. So, take a field trip to the Seminole Club at Freedom Square on Thursday, August 19 at 6:30 p.m. See other Kiwanians at the Division Council meeting.

Birthdays
Nick Gizzarelli celebrated his 60th birthday in a good way. Wife, Geri, recently was released from the hospital. Tom Nelson’s wife, Nancy, had a birthday last week, too.

He’s Back
That Mountain of a Man, Al K, had a lot to think about while he convalesced from mega knee surgery. And the fines were levied with purpose as Kathy Condon, Frank Ranieri, JC Russell, Dick Koch, Mitch Cochran and Bob Piplitz fell victim to Al’s skinning.

Paint Your Wagon……….
…….Or anything else you want at tomorrow’s Social. Call Marvin Gay or Lorin Bridge to join the fun at Painting with a Twist.

Thank You Letter from Scholarship Winner
Dear Mr. J.C. Russell,

I wanted to say thank you again for awarding me with the $1,000.00 scholarship. It has definitely helped me with the successful track I plan to continue on as I pursue and master my future goals.

Last Week at Kiwanis
Kiwanian of the Day, Mitch Cochran, introduced JP Peterson, local sports talk host for 1010 AM. A yearly guest speaker for our Club, JP targeted the audience well as we soaked up his inside knowledge of the local sports teams as well as the Big Four of college football in Florida: Miami, USF, FSU, and Florida. However, the team-du-jour, the Rays, dominated JP’s presentation as well as the Q & A. He likened owner Stu Steinberg’s philosophy to “Underpromising and overdelivering” and with the team now in first place, he looks for the Rays to tinker a little bit to ensure a playoff spot.

As far as this year’s players, he appreciates that there are no “jerks” on the team, another reason for the fans to embrace the Rays. This year’s feel-good story is the rise of Matt Joyce as a key contributor. Injured and in the minors since the beginning of last year, Joyce has emerged as a local star made good, as he played high school baseball for Armwood High, near Tampa.

More of JP’s Rays Ramblings: Crawford is a goner next year, probably to Darth Vader-- the Yankees; B.J. Upton with a limited baseball IQ, most likely will be traded; our hitting coach, Derek Shelton, needs to let the Rays hitters aggressively hit; Carlos Pena is very valuable to the Club for his RBI contribution and his defense; if any stadium is built locally, the best location is downtown Tampa; our starting pitching and bullpen is second to none in all of baseball.

More musings from JP: Until the Bucs spend money, expect more of the same. The Lightning’s new owner, Jeffrey Vinik’s hiring of General Manager Steve Yzerman and Coach Steve Boucher is brilliant. Yzerman, GM of Team Canada, the Gold Medal winner at this year’s Olympics, knows the players in the NHL as well as the up-and-comers. Boucher is the buzz around the NHL as the new “hot” coach.

As to the State of the Union of college football, look to Florida to challenge Alabama in the SEC, FSU to play Miami in the ACC Championship Game, and USF to be a Big East title contender in two years, and FSU’s QB, Christian Ponder, to be a Heisman Trophy candidate. Ok, you got all of that. Let’s see how JP does in a few months.

Thanks JP, we will be listening on the radio…… for the rest of the story.
