IB Students Win Kiwanis Awards

At a Kiwanis Club luncheon at Orange Blossom Catering in May 2018, seniors Caolifhinn McCormack and Maya Thompson received Al Muter Scholarship awards. Jamia Washington (’17) was selected for this last year. She attended the luncheon this year and spoke to the group and appears in the photo with Caolifhinn and Maya.

The Kiwanis Club has been a long-time generous supporter of education. The Al Muter scholarships were funded with an endowment from the Muter estate. The Kiwanis Club awards these annual scholarships to St. Petersburg residents with excellent academic records, community involvement, and work experience. Economic need may also be considered in selecting recipients. Because Mr. Muter worked his way through college, the scholarship requires students to work part-time while in school, whether in a school work program or a summer job.

Last year, the first place award was increased to $5,000 per year for four years. Kiwanis funded this year’s second place award of $1,500 per year for four years, and there were three one-time awards.

The first place winner this year was from Boca Ciega High School. Caolifhinn McCormack received the four-year $1,500 scholarship, and Maya Thompson received a one-time award of $1,000.
